Second Thoughts on Easy Street

I love, love, love the patterns created by these blocks. Absolutely love them!  It's the colors that are causing me to have second thoughts.

Based on the yardage needed according to Bonnie's first Easy Street post, I thought I chose red as the dominant color.  But it turns out - as you can see - that teal became the dominant one.  I like the teal but it's just a little too strong and maybe a little too dark, too.

Since only squares have been cut from the teal and it hasn't been sewn to any other colors yet I could easily switch it out.  What do you think?  What other colors would work to replace it?  Could I use a medium/dark gold?  Maybe a butterscotch-y gold?  Or how about a pale olive green?  Or how about a lighter variation of teal?

I'd be grateful for any thoughts or suggestions you'd care to share.  Thanks!

P.S.  Of the two photos above, the first comes closer to the colors my eyes see when I look at the actual blocks, or maybe somewhere between the two photos.

  1. I had the same thoughts on the color balance. But when several blocks were put together I thought the green (or your teal) didn't seem as dominant. If you haven't already you might want to lay out several blocks together before you make a change. I love your fabric choices. I think almost any color exchange would work with this pattern, though. I think mostly you want something that will set off your reds and not too light to compete with the neutrals. I've decided to do my half quilt in 2 squares by 3 squares after a LOT of deliberation!

  2. My partner wanted blue to be dominant and we are thinking her turquoise is going to wind up dominant..she changed up where things went too..I think they will look great regardless, but so hard to guess sometimes with a mystery!

  3. I'm in the same quandry. I am using the same colorway as Bonnie, but the green is really loud. I LOVE the design and am trying to decide if I need to substitute. Perhaps cut just a few squares of each of the colors you are considering and see if that doesn't help you decide. I'm the worst at making choices like that, but I love what you have so far!

  4. In looking at what you have so far, I can see why you are fearful of the teals being dark/strong enough to overwhelm things. Try this. Just cut a few of your golds as the teal replacements, but just place them on top of the teals without sewing at first. Then take a picture of the new color sitting on the block. It will allow you to try something without ripping or re-sewing before you are sure. My pictures teach me all kinds of things about color placement and value!
