Red, or Brown, or . . . .

All along I thought the color I would use for sashing for these star blocks was red.  Specifically, these two red striped fabrics with the stripes going cross-ways between the blocks.  (They're not all laid out that way below because the fabric isn't cut.)
I like the reds well enough but I had the impression that the quilt wanted either something more or some other color.

I placed some blocks against a mix of browns.  Hmmm.  Brown adds a different kind of warmth.  My husband likes the red because it's brighter but brighter isn't necessarily better.  I like the darkest brown on the far right.  But for the whole quilt?  Will I like it when it's finished?  Will I like it for years and years?
These blocks are laying on the floor in a room where I pass frequently enough that I can look in and catch them unawares, surprise myself to see what my first reaction is, so to speak.  I need to add some corner blocks as I did with the red, above.

How do you choose sashing colors and widths?

  1. I think the red sashing looks wonderful! I always go by instinct or my gut. The just needs to not match anything else in the quilt exactly which is not a problem with this quilt! Just choose what you like.:)

  2. I like sashing between blocks that is not too wide. About 1 1/2 inches is good and no more than 2. For small blocks maybe 1 1/4" but I find it harder to stitch the narrower width and have it come out even. The color is something I pick by look. I try different pieces of fabric until one suits me. I want it to be a color I have used in several blocks and usually a darker color.

  4. I think your method of choosing slowly is an effective way to come to a decision at this point in constructing a quilt. I think I'd go with red but that might be because it seems familiar. I'm certainly no expert but I wonder if sashing width is sometimes influenced by the scale of the prints in the blocks - maybe a collection of large scale prints would need broader sashing than smaller more subtle prints?

  5. I liked the red sashing, too, but I am following along to see what other people say because I don't ever know how to decided on those things either! No matter what you choose, I think it will be beautiful!

  6. I prefer the red or maybe a brighter olive. The blocks are a happy warmth so a dark sashing might darken the mood of the quilt. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap! Whatever you choose it will be beautiful!
