Little Birds

These triangles are for Part 3 of Lori's quilt-along, Quilters Madder, at Humble Quilts.

triangles within triangles

As I was pressing these the shape reminded me of flying geese and then I imagined little birds, probably because of the dark triangle in the centers.  I know I won't think of them that way by the time the quilt is finished but they may be inspiration for some other quilt.  They are only half-finished:  each needs another triangle to make a square.  I hope to finish them tomorrow.

Looking at these laid out together I think maybe I should substitute one of the pink-background triangles for a cream-background triangle.  I already have the half-triangle square made because, once again, I made a mistake.  (This time I made 4 extra half-triangle squares.)  Maybe I'll wait to decide about changes until after I see the layout of the quilt.

The next and last installment for the quilt-along is this coming Friday.  I can hardly wait to see it!

  1. Cute! I love the ones with the pink background! And love the antique look of it all.

    1. Thanks, Nancy. Yes, I like the pink background, too. It's fabric I've had for a number of years and if I found similar now, I think I would buy more. I don't often use pink but this seems to pull at me. Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment.

  2. Now will you come do mine? : )
I got step one finished and now I have steps 2 and 3 to catch up on together, and it is getting me all confused. Doesn't take much to confuse me.
    Yours look really nice, Nancy!

    1. LOL. Part 1 was so easy I couldn't find a reason not to participate. But then on to Parts 2 and 3.... I think it would be really hard to do Parts 2 and 3 at the same time. Part 3 has several parts itself.

Part of the confusion for me has been having two separate groups of little half-triangle squares in Part 2 and trying to figure them out and keep them separate in Part 3. I'm now wondering if we'll have more blocks to make with Part 4 or not.

I hope you've sorted it all out and are making progress, Janet.

  3. I am participating and already know my quilt will not turn out like the example quilt. I switched fabrics in Step 2 and now with Step 3 pending I'm waiting to see the reveal before I sew anything more together. If what I have won't work, then I'll have to veer off in my own direction. We'll see. (like your colors!)

    1. Hi, Julie. I understand about waiting to see the next steps before continuing. These "mystery" quilt-alongs are always a bit of a challenge for me. When I don't know the end result I always know that I may not like the finished quilt. But, like you, there's always the opportunity to change it up and make it my own. I don't think you've posted anything on your blog yet about this quitl-along. Maybe you're waiting to see what happens next?

    1. Thanks, Beth. I suppose there's a name for that triangle block, as well as the subsequent one with a large triangle sewn to the other side but I don't know what it is. Lori of Humble Quilts showed us the arrangement for all the blocks last Friday. I don't have mine sewn together yet but hope to get to them this week.

    1. I'm sure yours will look great, Susan. I'll have to stop by your blog soon to have a look. (I'm way behind in my blog reading.) And now that one of my daughters is here for a week, I'll be behind in my quilt-along sewing, too. I hope to catch up later this week.

  6. Love your triangles! So very pretty! The dark center really pops and makes them look so beautiful! :) Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thanks, Mia. These blocks called for a large triangle the same color as the little dark one to make a square, and then they become part of another larger block. I like them as they are in this post, though. I'll have to try to figure out some way to use blocks like these in a quilt.
