There It Is

The green and blue Buckeye Beauty top is finished.

Two of the things I've learned from this quilt are that not every quilt will be beautiful, stunning, and/or fabulous, and that I won't love every quilt I make.  Some quilts will just be quilts and I will be ambivalent about them.  This is one of the latter and I'm fine with that.  It may keep a child warm on a winter's night.  It may keep someone's bottom clean at a picnic.  And it may be a fine spot for a baby to play before he or she crawls.  It will be a serviceable quilt.

All that being said, there are some things I do like about this quilt:  the secondary patterns that are created by the placement of lights and darks and the arrangement of the blocks.  It has two strong diagonals and also a checkerboard where the blocks meet.  I think those create a lot of visual interest.  I have a dozen or more blocks in reds.  I'll make more and play with that color range.  (I like reds better than greens and much better than blues.)

You may also notice that not all sides of the outer border are the same fabric.  I ran out and substituted.  It is, after all, a scrap quilt!  Several blocks have more than one green or more than one blue fabric, too.

My One Monthly Goal for January was to make more blocks and then play with layouts.  I surpassed that goal by sewing them together and adding borders, so I'm linking this post to One Monthly Goal - January Goal Finish Linkup at Elm Street Quilts.

On to the next goal.

  1. Nancy, I like this quilt for all of the visual reasons you mentioned AND I like blues and greens--a lot!! : )
So while you learned some valuable lessons in making this quilt, I think you made a true Buckeye BEAUTY.

  2. It's certainly a very interesting design/block pattern. I think in our hobby of sewing/patchwork we just can't love everything we make, some projects really are a learning journey we needed to go on. That being said, I really like this quilt! Anyon will be lucky to use it:)

    1. I suppose my expectations are too high, thinking that I will love everything I make (even though it's always been so that I haven't loved everything). It's great that we can learn something even if we don't love the final result. Thanks!

    1. That's exactly what I was thinking -- an everyday quilt, or even an occasional, as needed quilt. Thanks, Ariane.

  8. Well, I say hooray for a finish even if you aren't completely in love with it! Good for you! (my favorite color is red too). :D

    1. I agree. I'm glad it's done! Now I need to make a back and quilt it.

You just can't beat red, can you?

  9. A perfect comfort quilt! It looks very inviting to me to curl up in and take a nap (but I don't nap, but if I did...your quilt looks comforting). I like that you substituted fabric in the border too.

    1. Thank you, Cathy. You're too funny. You make so many beautiful quilts and you never nap under any of them? I'd probably get more done if I didn't take naps....

  10. I love your attitude about this quilt! If we stopped making quilts when we hit a "so-so" quilt, well then, most of us would have stopped quilting altogether very early on indeed. Maybe once it's quilted you will like it better?? Years ago I helped my Grandma finish an "ugly" quilt (an old top she had rescued) and once it was quilted and washed, it looked real pretty to us, so we dubbed it the "pretty ugly" quilt and it became a favorite.

  11. Thanks, Cynthia. I don't believe I've ever read a blog post about a quilt the maker didn't love. Most quilters seems very pleased with their quilts. I suppose I thought it was just me....

I love the story about the quilt you and your grandmother finished for two reasons. First, that you and your grandmother quilted together. How wonderful. And second, reminding me that quilts can be ugly ducklings.

  12. And I love it! Scrappy quilts are near and dear to my heart and this one is wonderful, Nancy! And it is entirely O.K. for you not to love it. I doubt there is a quilter who loves every quilt they make, but someone will love it. I especially like that you used what you had and substituted when you ran out of your border fabric. The fact that 'one of these is not like the other' makes it all the more special.

    1. Thanks, Karin. I love scrappy, too, but not so much this one. Maybe it will grow on me as I continue to quilt it. I do keep telling myself, as you say, that someone will love it. Thanks for your encouraging words. I appreciate them.
