A Finish, Compared To....

This is my finished version of Block 3 of Cheri Payne's Baskets of Plenty sew-along.

Cheri Payne pattern Baskets of Plenty Block 3

I like it a lot and was feeling pretty pleased about it until I happened upon this photo of Block 3 in progress....

I really shouldn't do that -- shouldn't look back at the other options and compare.  But I did and except for that big pink flower, I think I like this bird and his narrow perch better than in the finished basket.

Thank goodness I have more fabric and can remake this block if I choose.  Thank goodness it's not a whole quilt and just one block.  But then again, maybe I'll use the one I've already finished.  I like it, just maybe not quite so much.

I've been enjoying and feeling challenged by Cheri's Baskets of Plenty sew-along.  I notice that my blocks are much simpler than Cheri's -- she uses more pieces and I use less and sometimes simplify them.  She uses wool for her applique and I use cotton.  She has lots of experience, I have much less.  We all start somewhere and go from there, from simple and easy to proficient and on to advanced and complex (if we choose).  In the end, the most important thing is that I enjoyed the process (even if I may have felt challenged and/or frustrated sometimes) and I like what I've created.  For you, too?

Have you ever changed your mind after you've finished a block and remade it?

  1. I like your block, but can certainly understand the desire to make a different one. Usually, with such a small amount of time to make each day, I end up sticking with the block I don't fully love over resewing an entirely new one.... UNLESS I can come up with a good use for the first block. Then, that justifies making a new one, since the first, old block already has another project to fulfill :)

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about remaking, Kitty.

Yes, the time to make new will probably outweigh the time it takes to remake. I have this up on the wall now and will let it rest and settle on me for a while. No hurry to remake if I choose to do that since there are 9 more blocks coming. I had though about using this block somewhere else. We'll see.

  2. I like the circles on the basket. A different look.

  3. I like your finished block. Maybe you can just re-do the perch if that's what's bugging you.
Sometimes I re-make blocks thinking I'll use the first attempt on the back. But usually, if I don't want it for the front, I don't want it on the back either.

    1. Thank you, Karen. I think it would easy to restitch the perch, especially because I haven't cut out behind it. And I agree, if not the front, not the back either. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  4. I rarely remake a block. Stitching time is limited enough that once I finish a block I try to be satisfied.
I really like your finish. Pretty sure I wouldn't remake it. : )

    1. Thanks, Janet. I like that: "I try to be satisfied." I think that's a wonderful ability. I should work on that.

  5. I wouldn't change a thing. I made a chicken quilt top a few years ago (actually it's the 3rd one from all that chicken fabric I bought when I first got into quilting). Anyway, it hasn't been quilted yet. And there is a block that is bugging me. I know I'll probably unpick it and rearrange the parts. But, I'm the only one who is bothered by it. I'll say it again, I wouldn't change a thing.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement to leave it, Robin. I have it on the wall with the other two baskets and will leave it there. If, when more blocks are finished I decided I still like the other version better, maybe I'll be like you and remake it. But for now, I'm leaving it.

I hope your chicken block isn't too difficult to change, if/when you decide about it.

  6. I like yours best. I love the little dots on the basket. Don't much care for that big pink flower. I rarely restitch a block. I just try to stick with my first try and move on. I figure that not every block need be a leading lady.

    1. Thank you, Jennie. I like that idea of not every block needing to be a leading lady. It's true: blocks don't all shine equally, and if they did, we wouldn't know where to look!

Well, I would have left off that big pink flower. It was mostly the "perch" color and size and the bird's fabric that I liked better. I'm not changing it, at least for now. We'll see how the rest of the baskets go before I reconsider again.

  7. Once again, I love reading about your process Nancy. Are these primitive type blocks growing on you? I think they are coming along beautifully and all the choices are good. Also love your soothing quilt in progress. My you are a busy girl!

    1. Thank you, Jocelyn. I think I've always like primitive style and I love these patterns. And I mostly like my results using the patterns. I'm still not quite sure I would call them "primitive style."

I'd like to be busier with quilting but I have some other things on my plate just now that takes me away from quilting. I'm still making some progress, though.

  8. Oh yes--I second guess myself all the time! I like both blocks--very cute!

    1. Thank you, Karen. I'm glad I'm not alone in the second-guessing department, even though I know it slows progress.

  9. No, no! The perch with the heart is perfect. The other one is bland, and I don't like the skinny part nearly as much. It wouldn't have balanced those circles nearly as well. Thank goodness you didn't include that pink flower. LOL

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Susan. It's true that I didn't look at the unfinished block (minus the big flower -- I just couldn't work that in now matter how I tried) with the circles in mind so it probably wouldn't have worked. But I may still try it with a narrow "perch"--later.

  11. Its great to make the block your own. But really the one you've finished is great.

  12. I like your first block and probably wouldn't change a thing. Having self doubt in what I am making and creating can be one of my biggest delays in finishing a project.I almost always stay with what I first made.Only change something if it was put together wrong or seams don't match at all. Thanks for linking up with this week's TGIFF.

    1. I know just what you mean, Shelley. I think I could make a lot more quilts if I could decide quickly, not reconsider, and just make. I don't know if it's the desire for perfection or lack of self-confidence or something else that causes me to reconsider (again and again, sometimes). I like the idea of staying with your first idea.

      Thanks for hosting TGIFF.
