Slow Stitching Little Plaid Baskets

I wish I were a better photo-taker.  It's probably me and not the camera, though it could be my phone's camera that's not up to snuff.  Anyway....

I finished stitching the outside of this basket probably in October before vertigo arrived.  Now I'm auditioning flowers and their placement along with the stems and leaves.  Everything except the basket itself may be moved or changed before being stitched in place.
This is the basket I've been trying to stitch for a few weeks.  After it's finished, I'll audition flowers, stems and leaves.
The stitching on this basket is of somewhat lesser quality that my usual.  Thank goodness no one will see the back after it's been quilted, and hopefully won't look too closely at the front, either.

These baskets will finish at 10" x 12".

I'm linking this post to Slow Sunday Stitching at Kathy's Quilts.  Thanks for hosting, Kathy.

I hope you're having a good Sabbath!
--Nancy.

P.S.  This is just to say there are a total of four more baskets to finish, including these, lest anyone is getting as tired of seeing these baskets as I am.

  1. I'm not tired of the baskets. I'm just happy that you're able to work on them. The flowers will look great and those little leaves look so happy.

  2. There's no quilting police here. I've always loved basket quilts, and yours is going to be lovely.

    1. Thank goodness for no police, Kim! I like the blocks. I hope I can come up with a layout that will do them justice.

    1. Thanks so much, Julierose. I have just a few more flowers already made and I'm trying to not have to make more, but the colors of the ones that are made are so similar.... I guess they won't all be sitting side-by-side so it should be okay.

  5. I’ve learned to use on OttLite folding task lamp for taking pictures of smaller projects – it seems to help with lighting. Such a cute basket! Are your flowers wool? Your stitching is fabulous! Is that needleturn on the basket? Wow!

    1. I don't have an Ott light but several people through the years have recommended them for various quilting purposes. Maybe I should check into buying one. Thanks for the suggestion.
The flowers are cotton. I prepared the edges of all the pieces in advance by turning them under and either basting or gluing them. I haven't yet mastered needle-turned applique!

    1. Thank you, Rebecca. It's great to be stitching again but I can only do it if the vertigo has settled. Sunday was a good day, today has been horrible.
      I hope you're doing well--staying warm, especially!

  8. Hi Nancy, I am sure I could go back through your blog to find out, but I will just ask here: what version of applique do you prefer? And is that the method you are using here? I am still so reluctant when it comes to applique. I like to quiz those of you who do applique to get tips and pointers.

    1. I prepare the baskets and flowers with turned edge applique which I baste in place. I turn the edges of the leaves under and use dabs of glue to hold the edges in place.
I haven't yet succeeded/mastered needle-turned applique. I know the way I do it creates an extra step but I'm happy not to have to have all the pieces ready to stitch.

Don't worry about your stitching. When the quilt is complete, it will look fabulous!

    1. Thank you, Sharon. Unless the stitching threads are loopy/not pulled tight, I'm not going to worry about the stitching. I figure if someone wants to look closely, they'll see what they see. Haha

  10. The baskets are so charming. Don't worry about your stitching! It must be fun to "audition" flowers for the baskets.

    1. Thank you, Cynthia, especially for the encouragement not to worry about the stitching.  I mostly wont.
It has been fun to make the flowers and also audition them.  I have 8 or 10 ready to go but they're all in one color range.  I'm trying not to have to make more, but if those don't work together, I'll pull out some more fabric and embroidery floss and get going.

  11. I love the Baskets. Take your time, try not to be critical if your stitches aren't as perfect as your usual.

I think you take good photos! Camera or phone? Try to hold very still, don't breathe, snap the pic. Use and editooor app, I edit evry single photo I take annd download, maybe 100 or so a week? I also take thee pics of each thing, enlarge, keep best, crop, straighten, fir exposure--discard the other two.
***Polish lenses even on phone, w one of those microfiber tiny rags for eyeglasses. Phone lenses esp get very dirty/ dusty.

    1. Thank you for the encouragement, Lizzy.

Lately I've been using my phone only. Holding still is a problem. When I "click" the button, I tend to move the phone a bit. I do that with my camera but it seems the camera is speedier than the phone. Thank you for the other suggestions. I take multiple photos of the same thing but I need to be more like you and discard all but the best. I think we have a few of the eyeglass cleaner cloths. I'll have to pull them out.
