One more little plaid basket is all stitched, including zinnia flowers, stems, and leaves...
and I started appliqueing the next basket. I love this red and army green plaid even if it isn't the most generous fabric for hand stitching.
When I applique these baskets stitch around the outside edge of an empty basket first. When that part is appliqued, I place the stems, the flowers, and the leaves, decide the order to applique them. I usually stitch the stems and leaves first, then the handle between the flowers. Sometimes I have to juggle the order of stitching and do a little of the handle, then part of a flower or leaf or stem. Eventually everything gets stitched.
I have this basket to finish and one more that needs flowers, leaves, and stems. Then I should be done! I'm looking forward to turning these into a top!

I love the plaid in that first basket. It is charming. You are moving right along - you'll be done in no time.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Robin. I deliberated about that plaid because it's so asymmetrical/uneven and, I thought, not very basket-like, but I think it works okay.
DeleteI saw early photos of the first of these baskets the other day and they were dated 2016!!!! I've been making these for 9 years! I guess I must have decided early on that there was no hurry about these... Maybe they can become a quilt (or at least a quilt top!) this year.
Your finished basket is so cute with the zinnias in those cheerful reds...
ReplyDeletenice work--hugs, Julierose
Thanks so much, Julierose. I wondered about putting three reds/oranges together in the same basket but I suppose they won't stand out amongst all the other baskets and flowers.
DeleteZinnias are the official flower for Zion (Illinois) so I'm partial to them -- your basket is charming.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nann. I think I knew about zinnias and Zion from some of your previous posts but forgot. I think there are lots of reasons to be partial to zinnias!
DeleteI love the idea of your pretty little baskets and the flowers, so nice.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Jenny. I hope I can choose a setting, sashing, and border that enhances them!
DeleteSo cute! So zinnie! On the just started basket, what are the whip stitched lines on the right of the basket's body?
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lizzy.
DeleteThe whip stitching is the tail end of thread from the prepared-edge applique. Sometimes if I have thread left over that's not long enough for another basket, I just do a whip stitch on the basket, then remove it when the basket is finished.
