Green for RSC (Plus Red, Blue, Yellow, and Pink)

Whenever I see a quilt and think, Oh, I want to make one like that, I find that my results don't quite match up to the quilt I saw.  I suspect that's going to be the case in this instance, too.  This 9-patch and snowball is the quilt I saw that I'm trying to replicate.

Here's one more green block for a total of seven.  I posted six last week.

And in an effort to catch up from January through April, I made some blue, red, pink, and one more yellow block.
When I see these blocks all together with their jumble of colors, they sort of turn my stomach.  Thank goodness they won't be in rainbow-color order in the quilt and will be separated by white/off-white/solid color snowball blocks.

I can almost imagine a 9-patch and snowball as a one-color quilt, especially with the variety of fabrics and prints in each color range.  Maybe for another time?

That's it for my Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) blocks for this week.  Thanks so much to Angela for hosting!

  1. Scrappy blocks can be very busy and therefore dizzying unless there is a unifier. I agree with your assessment, adding a neutral snowball block will tame the scraps and allow them to shine.

    1. Agree, Gwyned! So often I think lots of quilt blocks need their own space, especially appliqued or busy and colorful pieced blocks.

  2. Just love this pattern--I have put it pretty high on my "Want to do list" ...
But for now, it's Ellie--all Ellie work to try to catch up from this last week's MIA and this lack of stamina and energy right now...
You have begun a lovely collection of 9-patches...hugs, Julierose

    1. Thank you, Julierose. I hope your Ellie is going well and that you're feeling better each day. Covid really takes it out of you.

  3. I love your ''jumble'' of blocks/ squares/ fabrics. It looks so authentic and vintage, just a delight. I'd love it even if you just used these nine patches, no alternating blocks or sashing. Really wonderful.
I have wanted to make a one color Snowball for years, all blues w white---inspired by a small make-do quilt [doll quilt] I have. It's probably my favorite of my vintage doll quilts. I struggle with repeating blocks tho. Your work is inspiring me.
Do the Snowball spacers' corners need to match the four adjacent nine patchs' colors? Seems difficult?

    1. Jumble is a really good word to describe the fabrics in these blocks, Lizzy. I don't think I could never make a one-block quilt if the blocks were the two same fabrics. I would get so bored and then become sloppy in my stitching. I can make quilts with the same block if I can use a variety of fabrics and colors, though.
I'd love to see your blue and white doll quilt. It sounds delightful.

In Jolene's original quilt, she used a variety of white fabrics, some with prints, for the snowball centers and all blacks for the corners of the snowballs. I'm thinking of using a really dark, dark maroon/burgundy I have, though I probably have enough black fabric to make them. Black's not one of the colors I use very often. I think it would be really hard to match the snowball corners to the colors of the 9-patch blocks. The layout of the 9-patches would have to be decided first, I guess.

  4. I have a hard time when my fabrics are jumbled which is probably why I don’t really make scrap quilts. I like to add that bit to unify things too.

    1. I don't think I do well with jumbled fabrics, either, Juliann, though I sometimes like to make blocks that use a variety of colors, just thoughtfully chosen to go together. Sashing or alternate blocks to unity or give space to busy blocks can really make a difference, in my opinion.

  5. I love the quilt that you have chosen to replicate. It's bright, cheerful, and a bonus in that you are using fabrics you already have. The addition of black and neutral will make this quilt a lot more satisfying to you, I think . Nice work!

    1. Thanks, Robin. I'm not sure why I like Jolene's quilt so much but I do. Using fabrics I have is a good--no, a great!--thing. I'll die before I ever use all of it!
I was thinking of using a color other than black for the snowball corners, maybe a really dark, dark burgundy/maroon I have, or maybe a dark brown. I'll see what I think when the color blocks are finished.

    1. Thank you, Nancy. I think Jolene had a greater variety of prints with both large and small motifs and also a greater variety of lights and darks. But it may be that some of these blocks will get edited out when I lay out the blocks.
