Basket Play

I made a basket pattern and cut out some plaid baskets to applique.
I originally had a neutral background behind the baskets.  Neutral is my go-to, safe color for nearly every quilt I make so I decided to be a little "brave" and try out colored fabrics behind the baskets.

I'm just playing around here.  No commitment to backgrounds, to leaves, or to flowers.  The only commitment is to the baskets, and their shape may evolve.  I've been stitching around the edges of three baskets and have found that the two cut on the bias are more challenging to stitch, but I like how they look.  (Only one is shown here.)

My first thoughts for these baskets were plaids and autumn colors.  I pulled both from my shelves and also scraps from my small scrap box.

I don't know where these baskets are headed but I'm enjoying playing and trying out possibilities.

  1. Sure do like the colorful backgrounds. I think that the first one is especially nice with the great contrast--it really adds depth.

    1. Hi, Janet. You're right about the contrast in the basket with the green background. The other basket disappears on that orange fabric. I can't yet seem to commit to any backgrounds for these baskets -- yet. I'll cut out a few more and keep playing.

Thanks for visiting and sharing your thoughts about the baskets and backgrounds. I appreciate it.

  2. I love your simple but effective basket shape and the way you are 'playing' around with the fabrics. Wonderful stuff.

    1. Thanks, Jocelyn. Surely in my play I will hit upon a "perfect" combination for all the baskets!

  3. The dark backgrounds look so good and really show off the baskets. It's always fun to have some play time - enjoy yours!! :)

  4. I really like the basket on green, but I like high contrast, and the second basket is too blendy for me, though I like the design quite a lot. I think it's great that you designed it yourself.

    1. Hi, Susan. I like the basket on green, too. The second basket and background definitely don't work. It was just fabric I pulled to consider the color for the quilt in general and threw the basket on for a photo.

The basket is a smaller version (perhaps a third or half-size) of the basket in the medallion quilt. For some reason that basket shape is really pleasing to me.

  5. The print background makes an interesting background. Busier look but it makes everything pop.

    1. I think it's busier with the dark on the orange print, too. My hesitation about the orange background is that there's not much contrast between it and the basket. But I haven't sewn a stitch on these baskets yet, though I've cut out and basted a few more. I'll put them together on background fabrics and then decide.

Thanks so much for visiting and leaving a comment, Karen. I love to read what others see when they look at my blocks and quilts.
