Ohio's autumn colors are usually spectacular, but not this year. We think it's the lack of rain that has prevented most of the leaves from turning colors. Since the trees aren't providing the color I love, I made these. (Please ignore the light rectangles, the tape that's holding them to the wall.)
I'd thought about making leaves for a week or so but didn't have a vision of how they would look -- light background, dark background; solid fabrics/plaids/prints; one size, two sizes, three; sashing/no sashing; etc. Cutting and sewing them was pretty much a spur-of-the-moment decision. I now have a dozen 9" leaves with eight more in progress.
I love these leaves all together. I love that their bright colors almost glow against the darker/neutral backgrounds. (They're maybe just a tad brighter than in real life because of the camera flash.) They're not in any order or particular arrangement other than that the stems don't meet. They're just taped in random order.
If you have beautiful autumn colors where you are I hope you'll enjoy them for me, too!

Autumn colors are so inviting, aren't they? Your leaves are so pretty...nice work on these hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Julierose. I love autumn colors -- best when I see them outside, good when I have to use fabric.
DeleteSounds like you need a road trip to search for some fleeting fall color! Our trees are just now reaching peak color, most of the oaks have yet to turn, all of which seems quite late compared with other years. I've always loved maple leaf quilts, but have yet to make one. Your leaf blocks are so softly shaded they make me think of warm cozy flannel, are they? They will make a warm snuggly quilt however you set them.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Pat.After I posted the maple leaves, I heard the weather man say that autumn colors will come but they will be delayed by two weeks. The trees are starting to change and we have some beauties around, but so many are dropping their leaves that I doubt we'll have a lot of color this fall. All the fabrics are regular cotton, some plain, some printed, but no flannel. I rarely buy flannel unless it's closer to brushed cotton when I buy thrift-store shirts. They would make an inviting quilt but I don't have many.
DeleteOh,Nancy - your leaves are delightful and a beautiful nod to nature's Fall splendor! Your colors really do glow.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your sweet comment, Karin. I was hoping at least some of the leaves would glow but I thought not likely without sunshine on them.
DeleteDo you have autumn colors in the desert?
Love those rich fall colors on the medium background. We are like you here in GA. No fall color at all.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jennie. I was indecisive about the colors (as usual) and decided to just go for it.
DeleteOur colors are starting to change, one or two trees at a time throughout the city, or so it seems. I hope they keep turning before all the leaves are on the ground, especially since fall is my favorite seasons, partly because of the colors. I hope you're able to see some fall color soon. Maybe your area is like ours and just a little late this year?
I love your leaves. This is my favorite time of year and your leaves will make a beautiful quilt. Hugs
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Cathy. Autumn's my favorite time of year, too!
DeleteThis is just so lush and pretty! Can't go wrong with rich fall colors. We usually have great fall color in our canyons, but I didn't time any of my travels to see it at peak time.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Janet. I love autumn's colors together when I see them in nature. I hope this quilt doesn't end up looking like a jumble!
DeleteDo you not get much autumn color around your home, neighborhood, city? I'm sure the canyons are beautiful in the fall! Our neighborhood has many maples which are usually the brightest of the trees. They're finally started turning bright this week.
Beautiful Leaves, how fun! I remember brilliant red maples and dark red wild cherry trees from my early childhood in Ohio, the yard and our woods would glow. No leaf change here yet, tho the tree outside my window is showing a bit of gold tips after yesterday's storm.
ReplyDeletelizzy
Thank you, Lizzy. I did not know (or maybe didn't remember) that you lived in Ohio for a while. What part of the state? Ohio usually has beautiful colors in the fall and the leaves are finally starting to change. Just a late autumn, I guess.Do you often get good fall color there near the ocean?
DeleteOh how I love these blocks! The Maple Leaf was one of the first quilts I ever made back in junior high! I still love a great Maple Leaf quilt!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Wendy. This is my first maple leaf quilt. It's such a simple block. I love making them.Do you still have your quilt from junior high? It would be fun to see it if you do.
DeleteMaple leaves are my favorite - yours are looking good!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Susan.
DeleteYou have chosen lovely rich autumnal colours for your leaves. We are heading into Spring and enjoying the delicate colours of the new growth after the winter months.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Karen. It is always so interesting to me to remember that you who live on the other side of the equator are in the opposite season. I never used to think about it much until I started reading blogs. We so often talk about our seasons and weather. I'll be looking at spring in six months!
DeletePretty fall leaves! At least you have some autumn colors in the sewing room.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Rebecca. Yes, that's what I thought, too. If not outside, at least inside.
DeleteThat's a beautiful solution to our lack of fall color! Thanks for sharing your blocks on Wednesday Wait Loss.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jennifer.
DeleteOh I love these, Nancy. Coincidentally I made one maple leaf block yesterday just to test to go with these autumn blocks I've been making. I plan to make three more. It wasn't as hard to piece this block as I thought it would be. I spent ages trying to pick which fabric which is par normal for me. Hope you have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jocelyn. I know some make more complicated autumn leaf blocks but I liked this simple pattern best this time. It usually takes me a long time to choose fabrics, too. This time, the leaf colors were easy, but I deliberated about the background colors/fabric for a week or so and finally just went for it with the greens.
DeleteBeautiful blocks full of Autumnal color. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susie.
DeleteBeautiful leaves! This is one of my favorite blocks. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Valerie. This is the first time I've made maple leaf blocks but I really like them. Maybe a spring-time quilt in greens....
DeleteOh those colors!! They are so inviting and I LOVE fall!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Alycia. I think I like the colors together and I hope I can keep them going when I have more blocks! I love fall, too. My favorite season!
DeleteGorgeous blocks. The dogwoods are turning here in NC and it's been predicted another week or so before the rest.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sue. Our leaves are finally turning (the night after I posted this photo the weather man said the colors would be about two weeks late) but I don't think we'll get the full effect we usually do because the leaves will fall before they can change color.
DeleteI really love these blocks! I like how you've set them, with the random direction of the stems. I am feeling so similarly..... barely a sign of fall in Tokyo, and I'm missing my New England trees right now so badly!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cynthia. I love them, too, and hope I can keep them from looking jumbled when I add more to them.
DeleteOh, poor you, away from New England where autumns are the most beautiful! Does Tokyo usually have bright colors in the fall?
