June's One Monthly Goal Finish and July's Goal-Two More Rows

My goal for June was to hand quilt two more rows of Baptist Fans across the width of this quilt.  I'm pleased to say I accomplished three and a half rows.  I think the quilt will need another four rows to finish.
It's hard to see the big stitch quilting but if you enlarge this photo, below, I think you can see some of it.
The fans are 4" high but by the middle of each row they are wider than that. Just four concentric arcs repeated across the quilt.  I'm still working on consistent stitch length for these bigger stitches.  Maybe I'll manage it by the last row of fans--or the very last fan.  ;-)

I'm eager to finish this but don't want to finish before I have the next quilt ready so I can't quilt too fast because I'm still searching for backing fabric for several different quilts, one of which will be the next quilt....  Even so, I'm setting my One Monthly Goal for July as two more rows of Baptist Fans.

I'm linking this post to One Monthly Goal June Finishes at Elm Street Quilts.  I'm also linking this to One Monthly Goal July Link-up.  Thank you for hosting, Patty.

Thanks for visiting.

  1. Oh, this is turning out great! Such a pretty quilt. I want to do a pieced quilt with Baptist Fan quilting, it's just so nostalgic. Thanks for the close-up to show the texture. Its frustrating how long it takes to get a quilt done. I've been working at my current quilting project for two months and I'm not even halfway yet. But, like you, I know the only way to get it done is to work on it and not get discouraged.

    1. Thank you for your kinds words about this quilt, Robin.
As I was sewing tonight I was thinking about the reasons quilts become UFOs and it occurred to me that boredom is one of the things I have to guard against. When a quilt is coming together slowly, takes too long, I think I get bored with it. If I put it away for a while I can return to it with a little more enthusiasm than when I put it away.
Is the quilt you're working on now a big one? It sounds like it must be. But even for me, the quilt in this post is only about 46" x 52". Maybe I just don't devote enough time to hand quilting....
I hope you're staying cool and comfortable!

  3. Your quilting is just lovely Nancy, and I love the blocks - they're a favourite of mine, so very timeless. Hope you're having a great weekend.

    1. Thank you, Tazzie.  I'm still working to improve the quilting, especially this big stitch stuff.  It's a challenge when I've spent so much time trying to take tiny stitches with regular quilting thread.  I hope to master it, eventually.

    1. Thank you, Lizzy. I'm struggling with getting the stitches even with this big stitch quilting. I hope to eventually succeed.
