I pulled out this basket yesterday and I've not taken a stitch yet because . . .
I'm deciding where to begin. The inside of the basket handle has not been stitched because I knew the bottom of the stems would have to be tucked under. And I'm trying not to change threads too often.... But I don't see any way to avoid that. So I think I'll proceed like this:
-- lower parts of the stems stitched first with green
-- around the inside of the basket next with red
-- the upper parts of the stems with green again
-- leaves and flowers last with green, yellow, and pink
I think that should work.
I put the last stitches in this basket yesterday. This is the fifth basket finished.
You may wonder if I'm using only three or four fabrics for the flowers. I'm not, but when I choose the next basket to sew I try to find one with flowers of the same color that were in the previous basket. I usually finish with a flower and if I pay attention, and have thread left over, I can keep stitching with the same thread. I can't decide whether it that's lazy or resourceful.
I'm linking this post too Slow Sunday Stitching at Kathy's Quilts. Visit the link to see other's slow stitching. This is the 11th year that Kathy's been hosting his link-up. That's dedication and commitment! Thanks for hosting, Kathy.

I think resourceful is a fancy shmancy way of saying lazy. It's what I do all the time. That, and keep a few needles always threaded nearby.
ReplyDeleteIn this case I agree, Chris. Not wanting to re-thread needles is lazy. There are times when I don't equate resourcefulness with laziness but think of it as preparation for a future need or using what's on hand to make a repair, etc..
DeleteChanging thread all the time can be a pain, though I do like Chris' thought of having several needles on standby with different coloured threads. Your baskets of flowers are just so cheery. The new one is pretty. Enjoy your stitching.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kim. I guess it's the needle that's the problem. I could thread several needles with different colors but I have only one needle that I favor using, that is comfortable. I can't tell what kind of needle it is so I can't buy more. I usually use needles from the old packs they used to give out in the 1940s and 1950s, none of which are identified. I know, that's crazy! I've been changing it between threads as needed.
DeleteI love your little baskets, so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jenny. I enjoyed choosing colors for the flowers and am enjoying stitching them. I'm still unsure how they'll all go together in a quilt, so that's on my mind as I stitch. I also think about how to quilt the zinnias to help them look more like zinnias. I have plenty of time to decide!
DeleteI think it can be whatever you're feeling at the time. I love to change off the quilting thread colors randomly much of the time. I suppose that could be called lazy, but I'd rather call it creative license, lol.
ReplyDeleteI have definitely been feeling lazy lately, Pat. Haha. I'm sure it's creative license when you switch thread colors. Maybe I'll try that on a quilt one of these days.
DeleteI love your zinnia baskets. If I was doing the applique I d sew the entire basket first, leaving just the space for the stems. Then I d do the stems and leaves, close the Basket edge, adding the flowers last. I have never mastered the art of sewing the entire fabric picture at once.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of the word ''rude'', to me it is derogatory and pejorative, and has no place in our lives. I doubt that you are lazy, call yourself efficient and a saver of thread! A ''friend'' called me lazy yesterday because I was not doing a project as quickly as she thought I should [bec of severe back and shoulder pain, but lazy I was, she said.]
Thank you, LIzzy. Your order of sewing is exactly what I've done. I sometimes just have to stop and think because each basket is different.
DeleteI'm not a fan of the word rude, either, though there are times when people are ill-mannered or impolite.
I don't think I'm lazy, really, but there are times when I feel lazy, like the past few days or weeks, but I try not to give in to my desire to do nothing or next to nothing. I am a saver of thread!
How sad your friend called you lazy. We never really know another's situation, not mental, emotional, physical, or any other way, to judge them that way. And really, it's your time to use however you want and need to, to do things slowly or quickly.
Resourceful! Always go for the positive. =)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Susan. I like that! :-)
DeleteI adore your little plaid baskets! What a wonderful projects for your hands to stitch!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Kathy. They are fun to stitch. I never get bored because of the variety of colors.
