When One Quilt Depends on Another

I made the background for these star blocks from the light scraps in the basket.  Scraps just pile up until I have to do something with them.

Sort, or pull out all of one color or several colors from the basket -- choose a block, and begin a quilt.  (My scraps are not yet organized by color.  It's on my to do list.)

When I cut out behind the appliqued stars I had more scraps already sewn together into about 4" squares.  So I squared them and sewed them together with 3/4" sashing and tiny 3/4" center squares.

I continued making more and now have 23.  But then I thought I might want to use those light scraps to make a border for the star quilt.  So I quit sewing the leftover scrap blocks until I knew whether they would work for a border.  This is when progress on one quilt depends on another quilt.

Yesterday I laid the light scraps around the quilt, considering how they would look as a border.  It's not enough for me to imagine, and sometimes it's not even enough to see with the naked eye.  Sometimes I see things better in a photograph.  This time, just waiting till the next morning for a second look was enough; and the photograph added confirmation.

Now that I know I won't be using those scraps for the star border, I can make more of these blocks.

Sometimes, when I look at these blocks hanging together the thought of an old-fashioned window frame with small panes of glass comes to mind.  It's too soon to tell how these will go together.

I'm linking this post to blogs below and thank the ladies who host these link-ups.

Thanks for visiting.

  1. I love the idea of a light, scrappy quilt like this, but my light scraps do not seem to breed quickly enough. :(

    1. Thanks, Carla. How I wish that were my problem. I probably have so many light scraps because I use them so infrequently. I really need to be more consistent in using my scraps.

  2. So you are scrapping the idea for the scrappy border on the star quilt? I rather like the photo with the scrappy star border! Both quilts are looking good with the scrappy backgrounds.

    1. Hi, Sharon --

I'm not sure the scrappy border around the star quilt is completely out of the running but if I do make a scrappy border I don't think it will be as wide as I originally thought it might be. I'm still playing with ideas and possibilities but after laying out the scraps around the quilt I'm fairly certain that I will have enough light scraps even if I continue making the smaller squares for the other quilt. I appreciate your sharing your thoughts about the border. I always love to hear readers' thoughts about my quilts.

Thanks for your kind words about both quilts. I appreciate them.

    1. Hi, Christine --

Thanks for your kind words about my quilts-in-progress. Yes, I was pleased to know sooner than later that I didn't want that wide scrappy border. I should have laid those scraps around the edge a week or two ago, though, and I would have known even sooner. Sometimes I'm a procrastinator.

I think this is the first time I've had physical parts of blocks from one quilt that have transitioned into another quilt. It's been interesting.

Thanks for hosting Scraptastic Tuesday. I appreciate it.

  6. I love how scraps are a never-ending source of inspiration and how one project leads to inspiration for another. I know that those scrappy blocks will find their way into the perfect project in time.
Like you, taking a photograph seems to give me a clearer perspective of my project.

    1. Hi, Karin --

I guess a photo allows us to step back and --maybe-- be objective? I don't know what it is but it sure helps!

Sometimes scraps inspire me to make blocks, other time I choose a blog and then go looking through my scraps. Either way, my favorite quilts are scrap quilts.

Thanks for taking the time to visit and leave a comment. I appreciate it.

  7. I love both your scrappy projects. I would take the border for the first one, slash it here and there inserting a little of the red color at different angles making it look like the stars are shooting. I dont have enough lights in my stash. hmmmmm......... no, no more stash enhancement for me LOL

    1. Hi, SewYouQuilt2 --

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. I'm still playing with border ideas. I had thought of trying to repeat some part of the stars in the border. Or maybe the circles. A little more play and I'll decide.

You're strong to be able to resist buying more fabric!
