Buckeye Beauty Blocks for Rainbow Scrap Challenge

I've been wanting to participate in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) at Kathy's Quilts for a while but couldn't decide on a block I'd like to make in a dozen different colors.  But I have a baby quilt to make and baby's mom thought greens would be good.  Then I saw that the RSC color for May is green.  This month I'm in!

So here are three green (and --sorry to include it--one brown) Buckeye Beauty blocks.   (Ignore the tape holding them to my wall if you can.)  This is a super easy and fast block:  two 4-patches, two half-triangle squares.  It has just 11 seams if you cut and sew each piece separately.

They're pretty scrappy, and will continue that way.  I'm trying to use just two fabrics in each block but the blocks may get scrappier if I have all but one square or triangle of a fabric, in which case I'll substitute.  I'll also be using other colors.  I can't make myself do a baby quilt in just two colors.

These blocks are really a try-out for a quilt.  There's another block I'll probably make before deciding which I like better.

I'm linking this post to Scrappy Saturday at So Scrappy.  Thanks for hosting, Angela.

    1. Hi, Joyful Quilter --

Thanks. When I looked at the blocks this morning I wasn't sure about the green and tan one on the lower right, thinking the colors might be too close in value. Thank goodness seams come out easily if I change my mind.

My other block to try out will be Ohio Stars. With those blocks I could use either more colors or more fabrics per block. Maybe one day this week I'll make a few, compare, and then decide.

Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment.

  2. I struggle to make any quilt in just two colors--baby or otherwise. If I am limited to two colors, I at least have to use a variety of prints and shades within each color family, like you have done here.

    1. I'm with you, Janet. I'm quilting a two-color quilt right now but the tints, tones, and shades have a wide variation. I get bored cutting and making the exact same block from the exact same fabrics dozens of times. (And two-color quilts don't hold my interest like quilts with a broad range of colors.)

Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment.

  3. Don't limit yourself when it comes to colors. I do many Project Linus quilts for sick children and the more colorful the better. Lots of folks love doing scrappy quilts with whatever is on hand. It should turn out nicely. Keep up the good work! By the way, Rainbow Scrap Challenge is hosted by Angela at soscrappy, where I found your post. So glad you joined in.

    1. Hi, Paula. Sometimes when I do scrappy I end up overboard with colors so I'm trying to contain myself a little. We'll see how I manage (or not)!

Thanks for the correction about the RSC being at So Scrappy by Angela. I don't know what I was thinking. (I probably should have been in bed instead of writing a post.)
