A Sad First

This is the first time I've folded an unfinished quilt top to put it away for a while.  With the holidays coming I knew it needed to be up off the floor, but I am so sad to do it.  For me, out of sight is out of mind.  I need to see a work-in-progress to make progress on it.  I'm afraid this will languish in the depths of storage somewhere and I'll never pull it out again.

But this top had been on the floor for more than a month and I hadn't made a decision about that final border.  I was making no progress (though I was thinking about changing/adding to the second border from the outside).  It had to be moved.

I've put blocks away, in a stack, on a shelf, or in a box, but I don't know how to fold a quilt top that needs another border.  When I open it again I know it won't lay flat and then how will I measure for a second border?

The sadness of it all....  I hope this doesn't become my first true UFO (other than tops waiting to be quilted).

  1. This is such a fun top. Surely it will keep calling to you and you will pull it back out soon after the holidays!

    1. I hope that's so, Janet. I have a few photos of it in the file where I add new photos before sorting them. If I keep its photos there maybe they will keep calling to me.

  2. My experience of folded 'flimsys' is that they don't suffer - in terms of creasing or feeling neglected đŸ˜‰ I reckon you'll find yourself thinking about it over the holidays and then benefit from seeing it afresh when the celebrations are over and you can shake it out and lay it back on your design floor! In the meantime, enjoy the holidays!

    1. Hi, Allison. I hope my experience with folded tops will be as successful as yours, especially with creases. You're probably right that it will look fresh when I open it out again and I'll have some great idea for that last border by then. Thanks for sharing your experience with folded tops.

    1. Thank you. At the moment it's still laying on a little chest in the room where it was on the floor. I have to take small steps (it seems)when doing things I'm not sure I want to do. I hope not to bury it too deep in the closet and that the photos of it on my computer will keep it in my memory.

  4. We could nag you if you would like. Bring out that quilt-we all love it and want to see where it is going next. Would something like that help? Because we have followed your progress and just really like what you have done so far! we don't want it to languish!

    1. You're so kind and funny, Pam. I hope the quilt will nag me so that no one else has to! But thanks for the offer. (Of course, if you don't see it by next spring and you think of it, by all means put a bug in my ear!)

  5. It will be okay. Put it away, think about the border and get it out when you are ready. It will be okay. Really. I know. I'm a UFO Queen!!!!!! But I do have a few finishes. Really. It will be okay.

    1. Thank you, Cathy. That's just the encouragement I need -- to know I won't forget it and will pull it out one day to finish it. (I just hope "one day" isn't a year or two from now!)

  6. I think you should keep it out and make a decision; too pretty to not make a finish of it. But it will keep too and as Allison suggested, with a fresh eye you'll know exactly what to do next. Btw, I had to look really really hard to find the turned block in your last post...made my eyes water. Don't think you should worry about it at all.

    1. If I had a wall to hang it on I think I would keep it out, Jocelyn, but I just can't keep it on the floor with three little ones here for Thanksgiving and then again for Christmas. Perhaps Allison is right and I'll have fresh eyes when I pull it out again. Or maybe I'll have a fresh idea and then pull it out.

I'm glad you couldn't see the mistake in the little quilt in the last post. I've already started quilting it without a second thought about turning that block.

  7. Put a picture on your wall. =) Or on the inside of the door where it's stored. It's too beautiful to languish. Even if it's down the road a while, it will keep nagging you to finish it. =)

    1. I think you're probably right, Susan, that it will nag me. It's often in the back of my mind and I'm imagining fabric or patterns for that last border. I hope I don't leave it unfinished for too long.
