Quilters Madder & One Monthly Goal for November

I was determined to sew all the blocks in the little Quilters Madder quilt so the pattern wouldn't have any mistakes.  I know the original Lori posted had a block or two turned the wrong way.  Careful as I was, when I finished and held up the quilt, there it was:  one turned block.  Do you see it?  Is it obvious?  I believe I will leave it.

I made this sew-along quilt using Lori's directions on Humble QuiltsThis is the link to the final post which has links to all the posts for the sew-along if you'd like to make one yourself.

This sweet quilt began as a square, as per Lori's directions, but I added one more row to make it rectangular in shape.  The quilt measures 24 1/2" x 30 1/2".  I'm still considering whether to add a border.

I'm linking this post to the Quilters Madder Linky Party.  Click through to see thumbnails of others' quilts (both finished and not).  Many thanks to you, Lori, for creating and hosting this quilt-along.  It's been fun.

My goal for this quilt is to choose backing, layer this quilt, and quilt it by the end of November.  It seems a small goal but when I consider that it IS November and the beginning of the holiday season, I may have to push myself just a little.  With this goal in mind I'm also linking this post to the One Monthly Goal November goal-setting party at Elm Street Quilts.  Thank you for hosting, Patty.

  1. Wow, Nancy, if there is a block turned the wrong way in there it is keeping itself well hidden from my eyes! It looks great to me!

    1. Thanks, Marian. My mistake wasn't purposeful but it made me think that some of the "make-do" blocks we see in older quilts and wonder whether they were really a result of the quilter not seeing the mistake until later. I was reading a book in which an author interviewed an Amish quilter. There was a photograph of the quilt they were discussing in the book. The author asked the quilter about the block that was turned the wrong way and whether it was purposeful or not. The quilter looked at the quilt for a while and then commented that she hadn't even noticed the turned block. Make-do or not seeing, I love both ways.

  4. That may be the same block I had turned the wrong way too. I noticed it when I was quilting it, and fixed it. It would bother me later if I didn't. Love that you made this bigger. I thought about that. Sweet pattern. Maybe some day a full-size quilt.

    1. Hi, Ann Marie. I thought about changing that block and I think I would have if it had been the whole block and not that one quadrant. To my eyes this is a fairly busy pattern so it doesn't stand out quite so much. (But I may yet change it. The quilt's not layered yet....)

Did you post your quilt? I haven't clicked through all of the links at Lori's blog but when I went directly to your blog the most recent post is April 30.

Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment.

  5. It is very sweet! I try hard all the time to make sure my blocks are going the same way I laid them out, and I swear, I fail every time! I rarely do I ever change it.

    1. Thank you, Lori. I think something happens that we just don't see the turned blocks (or, for me, the lights and darks too close together, or the greens (or reds or blues) all clumped in one corner. Of course, after a quilt is finished, I see it all! Gotta love how my eyes work. Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment.
