A Little Patriotic Quilt

If you judged my patriotism by the number of red, white, and blue quilts I have in my home you would guess that I'm not the least patriotic.  I decided to fix that and make a flag quilt this week while I was between other things.

This quilt is adapted from a free Cheri Payne pattern, one she offered for a Summerthyme blog hop in 2015.  Many thanks to Cheri for sharing her talents.

The flags finish at 3" x 4" with 1" sashing and 1¾" borders.  I thought the size would be perfect for a door quilt.  In its current state -- without batting, backing, quilting, or washing -- it seems a little large but I maybe it will shrink and be comfortable on our front door.  I hope to get it layered, hand quilted, bound, and washed by or before the Fourth.  Can I do it?!  (I'm usually pretty slow....)

This is my third quilty finish in three weeks.  I'm thrilled but I won't expect the speed of those finishes to come so regularly.

Happy Independence Day if you live in the United States of America.  Happy July 4th if you live anywhere else.

  2. I love this little quilt. I saved the pattern, but never got to making it--that seems to be my MO lately. : )
You have done a sweet job of it, and I love that you will hand quilt it. I'll be cheering for you to have it finished in time for the holiday!

    1. Thanks, Janet. I like this pattern but I just saw Lori of Humble Quilts' version of Cheri Payne's "Liberty" and I like that even better. Maybe for next year.

I know what you mean about saving patterns and not getting to them. I'm beginning to have a stack. Very bad.

The good news is that I finished this little quilt today. It was dark by the time it came out of the dryer so I couldn't take a decent photograph. Tomorrow....

    1. Hi, Gypsy. Thanks. I'm just learning how refreshing small quilts can be to make, especially if they're easy patterns like this one.

    1. Hi, Jennie. Thanks! We have no visitors for the holidays and I was able to corral enough time in bits and pieces to finish it. It was dark when it came out of the dryer this evening but I hope to post it tomorrow.

  6. This is lovely and there is something so appealing about flag quilts. I know our maple leaf gets interpreted in so many ways, all enjoyable. I hope you do get it done for your celebratory 4th!

    1. Hi, Karen. This is a fun little quilt and so quick and easy, too. I would love to stay on a roll with the finishes but I'm not close enough to the ends of any other quilts to keep it up. Still, it was fun while it lasted.

  8. Hi Nancy,
This is just a wonderful door hanging! If you get tired of it, send it my way . . . or I may just have to make my own. I love seasonal door hangings and I must admit I am remiss at having anything on my door right now. I will remedy this tout suite (probably misspelled - can't remember my French from high school any longer). ~smile~ Roseanne

    1. Thank you, Roseanne. I'll remember you if/when I'm ready to pass this quilt along. It was really quick and easy to make. I don't always have a decoration on my door but the holidays always get something.

I just realized that -- if you have a blog -- there's no way to find it. Do you, and if you do, I'd love to visit.

    1. Thank you, Bonnie. I just finished it tonight. It came out of the dryer after dark and I need to find a rod to put across the back so I can hang it. I hope it will look great on the door. You're welcome for the pattern info.

    1. Thanks, Susan. You're welcome for the link. Yes, a break from baskets, sort of. I'm still thinking about Basket 6 but have yet to cut and sew fabric. I better get busy. I think the new pattern comes out on the 10th.

    1. Thank you, Gayle. I finished it tonight but it was too dark to photograph. Tomorrow, I hope.

I agree, Cheri does have some really fun patterns. She is so prolific. I don't think I could sew all her patterns if I spent the rest of my life trying.

  12. I think that's just right for a door quilt. I wonder, have you ever used the UV protection spray for door quilts? I have a little quilt on my front door that faded fast. It doesn't bother me because it was just a leftover block, but I like the idea of making door quilts to change around with the seasons, and I'd like to protect them a little better.

    1. Hi, Janine Marie. It's a few inches smaller than before quilting, washing, and drying, so I think it will be a good size for the door. I hadn't thought about the fabric fading but now that you mention it, I guess I should. So no, I've never used (or heard anything about) the UV protection spray. I should check into it. Thanks for mentioning it.
