Having just finished a quilt top and an applique block, I find myself between projects. I took a break last week to sew a simple summer dress (and need to sew a few more but have to find fabric). And of course there is Basket of Plenty Block 6 to work on but, aside from those, I'm between ends and beginnings. Now I'm looking at my quilts and blocks that were interrupted in process or that were laid aside for one reason or another and that I want to finish. In no particular order....
Stars
These 9" stars are left over from another quilt. My options are to make more blocks (I already have two cut, ready to be sewn), add sashing and/or make alternate blocks, or turn this into a center medallion and make smaller blocks to go around a border. I don't feel like this needs to be a large quilt but it's too small as it is.
Basket of Flowers Gwenny Medallion
This was a challenge quilt-along last year. I had to put it away because visitors were coming. The outer border needs to come off and be replaced with some other "something fishy," the challenge for that border. At the time fish tails was what I came up with but I think this quilt needs a wider last border and one that possibly incorporates blue to help unify all the borders. Hmmm.
Red and Green
These were impulse blocks. The inspiration for these 5" (4½" finished) blocks was a farm stand filled with pots of red roses in bloom. In 2013! Since then these have been taken out and put away several times. I couldn't seem to give up the idea of only red and green blocks and only a layout of circles alternating with sashed four-square blocks. Either I must reconsider possibilities or give up on these blocks. I saw a road sign the other day and new possibilities came to mind.
I have a few other scattered blocks, one or two of a kind, which are not enough for me to call them works in progress. But these, above, are definitely works in progress and need finishes.
Do you notice a dominant color among these quilts? Gosh, I need to expand my color range.
Being between, I've been trying my hardest not to begin another quilt, but I succumbed. I don't have a single patriotic quilt in my home and remembered seeing several small quilts with flags on them. The flags are stitched and are now awaiting the next steps. I tell myself I might be able to finish a little quilt by July 4th. Maybe....
What are you up to these days?

Three AWESOME projects!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joyful Quilter. They are not all favorites but I think they can become respectable quilts. ;-)
DeleteThe 1st quilt has a country Christmas vibe. It would work as is for a holiday throw. I love the fishy tail border on your medallion quilt, just add another border out of the blue. I'm curious to see what you add to the other quilt. . . a road sign?
ReplyDeleteHi, Robin. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about these quilts-in-progress. The 12 stars would finish at 27" x 36", so maybe a little small(?) but I can see how you see country Christmas. I'll give that idea some thought.
DeleteOn the medallion, don't you think that border is a lot too narrow for the whole quilt? When I look at it, it just seems to lack something. It doesn't say "finished" to me.
You might be able to put those stars on point and stretch those blocks out to make a bigger quilt. Your projects all look great. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your thoughts, Cynthia, and for your kind words about the quilts. The stars -- the last quilt with the stars was also on point and I like that layout a lot. I'll have to play a little before deciding.
DeleteThank you for hosting Oh Scrap! every week. It's a fun place to see what other quilters are making.
All of these are beautiful projects. I love that they all share the red color. It makes all of your quilts match!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Shasta. LOL: I hadn't thought about them matching but I guess, in a sense, they do!
DeleteI like the triangle border on the Gwen quilt, but if you did take them off would that be the start of another quilt??! I'm making improv herringbone quilt blocks with scraps, it's the last week off school before the winter holidays so I've just needed a stress free sewing project!
ReplyDeleteHi, ES. Thank you. I guess the triangle border could become the beginning of another quilt. (Oh, no! Another UFO before it's separated from its current quilt!)
DeleteI'd love to see your herringbone blocks but I don't have a link to your blog (if you have one). If you do I'd love to visit.
Great projects you have going - hard to choose which one to finish up next! Thanks for sharing on Midweek Makers
ReplyDeleteThanks, Susan. Yes, I'm not sure which will be next. Maybe the easiest/quickest? Or maybe the one that has the fewest questions about what to do next? I'll decide next week, I think.
DeleteThanks for hosting Midweek Makers.
I think your Gwennie medallion just needs a blue border added to the fishtails! (I like the fishtails, btw!)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy playing with 'your' colors - there's no arguing with colors that make you happy. 8)
Thanks for your thoughts about the Gwenny medallion border. The post photo is the first time I've looked at it since I had to fold it away. It's always interesting to me to compare what I remember with what I actually see when I look at something. I'll pull that quilt out soon and reevaluate. Maybe a blue border will be enough to give it a satisfying finish.
DeleteGreat projects. And great colours but all such different patterns. Personally I always feel it's time to start a new project, because the more projects the better.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pam. Yes, I would be in favor of starting new projects more often except that those unfinished ones take up physical space as well as mental space. Sometimes they nag me!
DeleteWonderful projects here! And I did smile, you do seem to have a colour preference :) It's all part of the fun, working with what you like!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda. I know I don't always work with red but still, I think I need to get past red for a while (after these quilts are finished).
DeleteAll your projects look wonderful! I think you could get away with just a blue binding on your medallion, but another border would look great too.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind comments about my quilts and for sharing your thoughts on the medallion quilt, Karen. I need to pull it out to look at it again, play a bit with several ideas I've had, and then decide. Maybe just a blue binding would work.
DeleteI like each of those projects, but especially the stars. I don't see any reason to expand your color palette. =) I'm of two minds on that last border on the Gwennie quilt. I like it, but I can also see what you are saying about blue.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susan. I know red is not the only color I use so I think it's funny that these three quilts have similar colors and they've all been on hold at the same time. Maybe I'll make a blue quilt.... (Or not.)
DeleteI need to pull the Gwenny quilt out an play with several ideas I've had, see if any of them improve the quilt....
