Slow Stitching Today

This is a wholly boring photo of my current slow stitching.  It's the Pineapple block for Linda Brannock's "Flowers" quilt.  I have the two triangles, bottom right to finish before I move to the pineapple leaves.

I wasn't going to do the triangles.  I saw someone else use adorable, little 9-patch blocks instead but figuring out the math to make the change was beyond my abilities of concentration just now.  So the triangles it is and I like them just fine.

This block is for the Linda Brannock Flowers quilt-along on Facebook.  I have this "Pineapple" block to finish.  It will look something like the one at right when it's finished, with different colors, of course.

I have one more block to make, Marigolds and Blueberries, and then I'll be finished with the applique blocks.  The challenge will come with choosing colors for the sashing which consists of squares made of half-square triangles.  One possibility is to use a consistent brown/putty color for one side of the square and colors from the flower blocks for the other side of the square.  I'll have to try some layouts to decide.

We learned in December that our Airedale girl, Hannah, has lymphoma.  She is 12, going on 13.  She's feeling okay now but lymphoma can cause a quick change.  I know pets are not humans but they are family members (at least, for my family and me) and their going can break a heart just like the passing of a beloved human family member.  We will miss our dear girl but for now we hope she continues to feel okay for a while.

I'm linking this post to Slow Sunday Stitching at Kathy's Quilts.  Thanks for hosting, Kathy.

  1. Oh Nancy, I'm so sorry to hear about your beloved fur-baby. I hope her last few months (let's hope for years) will be peaceful and pain-free for her, and that her eventual passing is gentle and in her sleep. They do leave a huge hole in our hearts and home when they pass.

    1. Thank you for the encouragement with the flowers blocks, Jennie. I've just started on the last one. The challenge for me will be making a decision about the sashing -- colors and fabrics. I don't know where to begin. I'm thinking maybe a putty/brown/drab constant with the brights from the blocks, but .... Thank you for your kind words about Hannah. I don't know what I will do without her.

  4. I admire your dedication to the applique blocks.
Sweet little face on your fur-baby. Sorry about the news. Lost a dog to cancer when I was young. It is hard to see them decline.

    1. Thank you, Janet. It really is dedication to finish the applique on these flower blocks since they aren't ones I'm in love with. I enjoyed Cheri's Baskets of Plenty blocks much more than these, but since I've begun I think I should finish.

Thank you for your kind words about Hannah. She's such a sweet girl. We'll miss her.

  5. I really like the scrappy red triangles on your pineapple block. You quilts are always so warm and inviting, Nancy. Must be all the love you put into every stitch.
I'm sorry to hear that your sweet Hannah is fighting lymphoma. She hit the jackpot when she ended up in your family because I know she is treasured and loved and isn't that a wonderful way to spend your life!

    1. Thank you, Karin. I'm not so sure this one will be warm and inviting -- these flowers are so odd! ;-)

Oh, yes, poor Hannah, and poor us without her. I believe she feels treasured and loved here in our home. After she came from a situation of abuse and neglect, we began to see her blossom. She has not overcome all the challenges she faced from the early years but she is such a good Airedale.

  6. I think those triangles add a ton of charm to the block, so I'm glad you're going with them.
Sorry to hear about your pupper - she looks like a real sweetheart. Pets really are members of our families and the loss can hit us hard. Hugs.

Thanks for your kind words about Hannah, too. I don't know what we will do without her. I'm dreading the day -- but enjoying now as much as I can.

  7. Those triangles add so much whimsy. I like the fabrics you have chosen and that it's not all the same red fabric. So sorry about Hannah. Glad you are able to cherish her with the time you have left.

    1. Thank you for your responses to this block. The applique for these is fairly easy but they're not flowers I would gravitate to. Sometimes I wonder how I decided to stitch along with this quilt. Though I admit that I've learned some things and been challenged. That's good.

Thank your for your kind words about Hannah. We will miss her horribly.

  8. How interesting to have a pineapple and those triangles on the edge in this set of blocks. Keeps things interesting.
As you know we love our dogs...they are a part of our little family here at the wooden house, but Rex is 11 now so... I know exactly how you are feeling. Good luck to Hannah in the meantime.

    1. Interesting, unusual.... I think most of the blocks for this quilt are on the unusual side, Jocelyn.

Thank you for your kinds words and good luck wish for Hannah. It will be just too sad when she goes....
