Blue and Gray - One Monthly Goal

For my One Monthly Goal for May, I will cut this fabric. . .

and align it so the pattern continues across the seam, then stitch it to become the backing for this quilt.

Next I will layer and baste the quilt.  That's it for my One Monthly Goal, just get it layered and basted so I can begin quilting.  Whatever happens after that will be a bonus for the month.

I haven't decided on thread (maybe grey, black, or a dark neutral) or a quilting pattern but I'm trying to imagine Baptist Fans or straight lines either on the diagonal or vertical and horizontal.   Sometimes I don't make the decision about quilting pattern until I have the hoop on the quilt and the needle threaded, although I've been considering the options all through the basting process and sometimes longer.

I'm linking this post to One Monthly Goal May Link-up at Elm Street Quilts.  Thanks for hosting, Patty.

  2. Best of luck on getting your quilt layered and basted this month! Looking at your photo, I think I would "puddle" medium and charcoal gray thread across the quilt to make my final choice. Those seem like they might be the best options.

    1. Thank you, Joyful.  Yes, you're right, grey or charcoal thread might be great for this quilt.  I'll give them a try.

  3. It sounds like we have the same approach to quilting. I never know what I will actually do as a design until I start with the first stitch. Have fun with your goal!

    1. Thank you, Karen.  It sounds like we do have the same approach.  I think about the options before I begin but those first stitches....  Though I amid that I occasionally un-quilt if I've finished a small section and don't like it.

    1. Thank you, Robin.  I'm pleased to have found this fabric, too.  With the quilt and the back side-by-side I realized that this quilt will be very grey -- on both sides!

  5. Love this classic quilt, perfect backing choice too. You have such a great eye for what is authentic.

    1. Thank you, Lizzy.  I think the back will work well.  It will be a very grey quilt!  It's strange, though, how I keep remembering/thinking about the blue and grey stripes.  Or envisioning a red in the same print as the grey.  But they grey print will work!

  6. It's a great goal, to get to the quilting stage. I think both of your ideas sound good for this quilt!

    1. Yes, Cynthia.  As slow as I am it sometimes seem momentous to have a top layered and basted and ready to quilt.  Soon!

  9. I love this quilt, Nancy. And I think you found a lovely backing.
Thread color is such a hard choice for me. I started quilting a quilt today that I have put off for so long because I couldn't choose a thread color. I am happy with my choice. I would lay strands of the three colors across a large area of the quilt and see what you like best.

    1. Thank you, Janet.  I never want my quilting threads to stand out (because I don't yet hand quilt well enough) but making a choice may depend on what threads I have or can find to buy just now.  Your idea to lay the options across the quilt are a good idea and I think I'll do that.

    1. Thank  you, Patty.  Just tonight I pulled out quilt top and fabric and was concerned I hadn't bought enough backing fabric but it looks like I'm in good shape.  Whew!   Thanks for hosting One Monthly Goal every month.
