Spring in Ohio, 2021

I only realized a few years ago that spring arrives from the ground up when I saw flowers in bloom and bushes turned green along the roadside, but the trees were still bare.  It was another few weeks or a month before the tree had leaves.  I love to watch spring unfold.

Last week my daughter and I went to a county MetroPark where we saw two varieties of daffodils at ground level,

hellebores, which I understand are late-winter blooming flowers,

and Glory of the Snow blooming amongst the winter leaf debris.
Low bushes were budding green

but the trees were still bare.

Looking skyward we saw bare branches and just the least hint of red on some of the trees,

and more tight red buds on others.

Three days later, on April 1, we drove about two hours north to the Canton area.  By late afternoon the clouds had grown heavy and suddenly, this.
Great, huge, wet flakes fell, thick and heavy.  As beautiful as it was and as much as I would have welcomed and loved this in December, January, or February, I'm not interested in going back to winter now.  I decided it was Mother Nature's idea of an April Fool joke.
It was a snowy drive part of the way home but the snow didn't stick and the roads were not slippery.

Five days later we drove south about an hour and a half and were greeted with lush green.  This is a 60-mph-photo, taken from the car window as we rode along.

It seems like Central Ohio is having an early spring.  Some years the daffodils don't bloom until mid-April.  We have violets in bloom now, the little tulip plant is close behind, with the iris in line to bloom near the end of the month or in early May.  Some years the iris don't bloom till June.  With an early spring, it leaves me wondering what to expect of summer.

If you're in the Northern Hemisphere, I hope you're enjoying spring, whatever that looks like for your area.  If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, you're probably enjoying autumn -- may favorite season.  I would join you if I could.

    1. Thank you. Oh, how lovely that you have daffs in your yard. We used to have some but they didn't come up this year. Don't know what happened. I, too, hope winter doesn't reappear, Julierose.

  2. Which park did you go to? One of our weather forecasters, Jim Ganahl, I think, used to say, "three snows after the forsythia blooms". It helps me not get excited too quickly. Most of these snows are pretty quick like you saw,

    1. The photos are from Inniswood. It's one of my favorite MetroParks. Yes, I heard the folklore about forsythia and snow. But then the groundhog told us we'd have 6 more weeks of winter and the weather promptly began to get warm. So, who knows. It's true, though, that the snows this time of year are usually light and melt quickly. I just hope the blossoms on fruit trees aren't harmed.

  3. We must be 2-3 weeks behind you, our daffodils are still in the bud stage, though we may see a few by early next week. So looking forward to them!

    1. Oh, yes, Pat, those daffodils are a bright spot in spring, aren't they?  You'll enjoy them next week.  Will you bring some inside?  Ours didn't make it from last year so I'm enjoying the violets right now.  (And the daffodils in the stores.)

  5. Welcome to Canton! I live in East Canton (the farm hicks of Canton, LOL). Yes our ground was covered in snow. It's been in the upper 70's this week. My flowers are starting to bloom. I got to mow for the first time today. Yeah! I LOVE to mow! We finally put in the summer screens for the windows.

    1. Thank you, Kathy. We enjoyed our visit. We went to Heggy's and the stopped at a few other places. I didn't know you were in the Canton area. I knew you were north of us but I didn't know where. You probably have a lot of mowing to enjoy as I remember photos from your blog. This is great mowing weather, too. I wonder, though, if our area or yours will get more snow. Even if we do, I'm sure it won't last long.

  6. My daffodils are also in bloom, but they are in a raised concrete bed, which tends to heat them up and force their blooms sooner than if they were in the ground.
Isn't it fascinating how nature can turn the seasons on and off with a switch?
