Out and About - Saturday's Snapshots

The dam at Madison Lake State Park...

runs parallel to the road.  What a surprise!

What is this thick, dense, beautiful ground cover?

We saw this quilt at a tiny restaurant northwest of the city.
I enjoy the carefree way the arcs were pieced.  Does this pattern have a name?

An appliqued and embroidered tea towel I left at the thrift store.  I love the aqua and green flowers.

Butterweed plant along a country road not far from our house.  The yellow is astonishingly bright.

German Village is an area just south of the center of the city where German immigrants settled.  Many of the homes are built of brick, nestled close to each other, and many of the streets are still paved with bricks.  The homes and yards are beautifully restored and maintained.  I appreciated these fences, one in front of one of the homes and the other alongside its neighbor.

Behind one fence we saw these peonies, perhaps the most beautiful peonies I've ever seen.

Wishing you a great weekend!

    1. Glad you enjoyed the photos, Julierose.  Actually, they came from several different days (and months, I think).  When I do these posts I just collect whatever interesting photos I've taken since the last post.
I think what you call "dresdens" are not but I'm still scouting around to come up with a name for this particular quilt.

  2. Hi Nancy, Yes as Julierose says, what a nice outing. THose peonies are gorgeous pinks. The splintered dresdens are just what I love to stitch by hand. I'm very drawn to this layout and took a photo on my phone. I even like that pinky/rosy colour very much. Thanks for showing us!

    1. Thanks, Jocelyn.  I love those peonies, too.  With the pink and the yellow, they just glow.  I think the "dresdens" are not really dresdens but I'm still scouting around to find the name of these blocks/this layout.  It's interesting and unusual, isn't it?

  3. That is a very striking quilt with a unique setting (I don't know the name). Absolutely gorgeous peonies!

    1. I love the peonies, too, Cynthia, and when I saw the quilt, in a small, darkish room because they'd already finished serving for the day, it stopped me in my tracks.  I wish I'd taken more photos, especially of one complete block instead of small sections.

  5. The quilt block I THINK is called Sun Rays, just was not done in those colors.

    1. Thanks so much for scouting out the quilt name, QuiltGranma. I agree it looks very much the same.

  6. Beautiful photos! Love the meadow of Butterweed, and the pretty peony.
I tried to look up that pattern in Brackman's new encyclopedia. I found that layout, but there were little differences in the pieced design. They are named everything from Path of fans, to Chinese Fans, to Baby Bunting--and a few things in between. :)

    1. Thank you, Janet.  Glad you enjoyed the photos. And especially thanks for looking up the quilt pattern in Brackman's new book.  Using the names you suggested, I looked up those patterns on google and found that they are all very similar.  I think I'll do a little more research to see what I can find.

  7. That pink peony is just dazzling. So. . . beautiful. We have white tree peonies with the striking yellow center but I've never seen pink one. I think my MIL called that pattern Indian Trails but I've looked it up online and can't find anything that looks like your picture. I'm going to go look through my books because I've seen it before. It's a great pattern! You ought to do a SAL.

    1. I don't believe I've ever seen tree peonies, Robin, just the bush kind around here. I agree that the pink one is amazing.

Yes, I looked for Indian Trails, too, but didn't see anything similar. I'm not sure I'm in a position to do a sew-along considering how few readers and commenters I have. But it's a fun quilt, isn't it? A year or so ago I sketched an idea I had for a quilt with blades. I almost included in it an upcoming post but it seems like I'm great with getting ideas and beginning but not so great with finishing. I'll post the drawing if I ever make the quilt!
