Scrappy Stars in the Red Range

Scrappy Stars
I've been making these stars for a few months, sometimes as leaders/enders, sometimes in earnest.  I now have 48 finished, with five more in progress.   It's time to think about how to turn them into a quilt.

My first layout idea was this.
Scrappy Stars
But after looking at these a few times over a day or two, I realized the stars really need some space of their own.   They're just too mashed together and congested, creating a very busy quilt.   So I moved on to my next idea.

This is a straightforward layout:  on-point, diagonal set with alternate squares between.  I like that each star gets its own space to shine.

I'll use this layout unless a better idea comes along.

Next I need to sort out fabric for the alternate squares.  I always imagined using a light/lightish fabric, maybe leaning toward pink, since all but a few of the stars are in the red range.  I have two pieces of yardage with enough fabric to cut all the alternate blocks (and hopefully side setting triangles, too).

This fabric looks more pink than the other because it has red vines and flowers with little grey/charcoal/black circles.

This fabric has a white background with little heart flowers.

You can see both fabrics in this photo.

The arrangement of the stars needs some work, something I'll decide after I choose fabric for the alternate blocks.  And, I guess the other possibility for the alternate fabric is to choose a darker or brighter fabric.  I'm still playing and considering.  I welcome your thoughts on these blocks, layout, fabric, and color.

If I use only the blocks I already have, the layout will be 6 blocks by 8 blocks. A 6" block set on the diagonal measures about 8½".   The quilt would measure about 51" x 68", so a smaller quilt, not even large enough for a twin bed.  But someone might like it....  Or maybe I'll make six more blocks....

  1. Oh I am in love with these gorgeous blocks of yours. Don't they look so lovely all laid out! Whichever way you choose will be wonderful and I'm hopeless at that aspect of the process so I won't venture a suggestion, Nancy!

  2. Oh those stars. they are so lovely - I like the idea that they get their own space, and I sort of like the darker background fabric - the one on the right. In the photo it makes them stand out better.

    1. Thank you, Alycia. When blocks are this busy, with so many different fabrics in such a small area, I think they need a space around them to be appreciated.

  3. I was so pleased to see your post today. It's always fun to read what you have to say. I like the lighter fabric for the alternate blocks. It has more contrast and I always love contrast. But, that's just me. You always come up with great ways to put things together.

    1. Thank you, Robin. I'm leaning toward the lighter background for the alternate blocks. I haven't tried a bright or dark red, which I thought might work, but I don't have any on hand. I'm just concerned about how quickly a white quilt will get dirty, especially if used for a baby. This feels like an uncreative layout because it's just the same as the last scrappy star quilt I made! I guess some layouts are "classic," maybe?

  4. These are darling! I love the white ground, so fresh and crisp. The multi looks dull from a distance, in my opinion; the red hearts on white really make to Stars shine.

    1. Thank you, Lizzy. They're just so scrappy! I like the white background, too, but worry about how quickly a quilt with white will get dirty, especially if it's a baby quilt.

  5. Another beautiful quilt in the making. I think whichever background you choose will be a good option depending on where the finished quilt will be displayed.

    1. Thanks so much, Pat. This quilt is almost identical to the one I just finished and sent to you, except the fabrics in these are different. I'm hoping the quilt will get used, perhaps as a baby/toddler quilt, and my concern with a white background is how quickly it will get dirty. But, of course, the quilt will be washable and dryable, so that will help.

  7. What a lovely batch of stars. I think I'd hold off on a decision until I see what a dark background does for them and maybe a neutral white. Although I do like your overall print that looks pink. Have fun making a decision!

  8. I like both. The white does make them pop. On one of my quilts I didn't have enough of the light color for the setting triangles. So I did the middle in the light and the triangles in the darker fabric. It will look great however you decide.
