The Last of the Orange Blocks for RSC 2025

On Thursday, we had the most beautiful weather.  Blue skies except for an hour or two of clouds when we thought it might rain.  It didn't.  The day was cool enough and windy enough to open the windows and let the breeze blow through the house and billow the curtains.  Outside, the branches of the trees swayed in the wind.  Just glorious!  I wish I'd taken photos.  If every summer day could be like that one, I'd love summer!

These are the last of my orange RSC blocks.   (Linking to Angela's RSC blog.)

I have 10 now, probably too many for the quilt I'm hoping to make.  On the other hand, having so many will offer me options when choosing blocks to use.  And orange also happens to be the favorite color of one of my grandsons.  I could make some more and have enough for a quilt for him.  But you know how fast children's favorite colors change....  (And considering how little I like orange, I'm sure I'd struggle making enough for a whole quilt.)

Vertigo has been visiting again this week so my only accomplishments are finishing these orange blocks and finishing the bindings on Everyday Patchwork and Parsonsfield.  I'll post about those when I can get some decent photographs.

I hope you have a great weekend.

  1. Our heat has not been too high yet. We had rain for about 2 days and the most incredible winds that not only billowed but blew quite a few branches off trees. I have had episodes of vertigo over the past few weeks. The worst is when I lay down on my left side. I use a bit of Dristan nasal spray. The doctor suggested an antihistamine for allergies.

    1. Your winds sound magnificent except for all the tree branches blown down. I hope your heat continues to a comfortable temperature.
Have you tried one of the four maneuvers for your vertigo, Chris? Sometimes the right one can help, though in my experience I also needed physical therapy. I think these two recent episodes were brought on by not drinking enough water. The new recommendation is to drink one ounce of water for half your weight in pounds. (That is, if you weight 100 pounds, drink 50 ounces of water.) I'll look into Dristan. And yes, for me, too, lying down is the worst. I hang onto the bed for dear life so I won't be thrown off (even though I realize the bed isn't moving). Other movements trigger it, too....

  2. We had 2 days of 100 degree weather and the most blustery winds Winnie the Pooh could ever imagine. And then today we are 74 degrees - crazy! I'm glad you are able to quilt a little in spite of the vertigo. This June has been so busy for me. It has felt like December when everyone keeps planning parties and one feels like they would offend if they didn't go. (I'm just not a party person - sigh) Hope you can have some more good summer days.

    1. Oh my gosh, 100 degrees! Did the winds help cool the air or make it feel cooler? Lovely for you to get 74 degrees. Our temps today are into the 90s and we have a heat advisory. I can't understand how 93 degrees can feel like 100! Anyway, we're staying inside. I guess the heat you had last week has moved our way this week.
Now the vertigo seems to come and go. When it comes, it lasts for 10 or 15 minutes, but then I feel not-quite-right after it goes. And then it will come again later. If I move very carefully I can sometimes prevent the spinning sensation.
Oh, I know about not wanting to go to the parties. Me, either. I guess June is the season for graduation, shower, and wedding parties. Maybe a few others, too.
I'm hoping for good summer days, too -- for both of us!

  3. Vertigo us a nasty condition, so I've heard, my sympathies to you. That's lots of pretty orange blocks you've made.

    1. Thank you, Jenny. I agree that vertigo is nasty. It limits my freedom of choice about what I want to do. I'm mostly okay if I can sit and do things.

  4. Your orange blocks are looking great--so sorry that your vertigo is rearing its ugly head once more!! :(((( Hope it goes away soon...
I am finally starting to feel a bit better -- not really doing any sewing but resting and trying to eat a bit...hugs, Julierose

    1. It's great that you're starting to feel better, Julierose, even if not sewing yet. It must have been an awful time for you. Will you have long-term repercussions?
Thank you for the kind words about the orange blocks.
I'm sorry about the vertigo, too. I hope, with lots of water and extra Vitamin D, that it will disappear again for a while. The physical therapist told me that water is key to keeping it at bay and I suppose I wasn't paying enough attention for a day or so.
I hope you continue to feel better and are back to your usual self soon.

    1. Thank you. Orange was a hard color and I'm glad we're finished with it for this year. My oranges seem to meld into each other.

  6. I love orange but it is hard to find good orange fabrics - in my opinion. Hoping the vertigo settles down.

    1. I agree, Juliann.  It's hard to find good oranges.  I think it's also hard to find good greens.  But then, I supposed it all depends on what "good' means to each person, right?

  8. Sounds ;like a perfect day to me, too!
Isn't it interesting how different colors speak to different people. I really love orange, but grey is something I barely have in my stash, in spite of grey having been such a popular color for many years.
So sorry to hear the vertigo is troubling you. Never a fun thing. I recall in episodes I suffered years ago that I would have to crawl on my hands and knees to get to the bathroom, so I wouldn't tip over. I hope it leaves you alone very soon!!

    1. I guess many of us gravitate to particular colors, Janet. I know you love purple, too, and it's one of those colors I have very little of. I think we sometimes change which colors we love over time. Looking at old photos I was surprised to see myself wearing colors I don't really like now.
How have you managed not to have vertigo again after such awful episodes? The physical therapist I went to said that once you have vertigo, it never completely goes away and that I'd always be susceptible to it. The episodes I'm having now come and go. I stay put while I'm having one and then move when it's quieted. I think I let up on drinking enough water one day a week or so ago, and I know I went back to 2,000 iu of Vitamin D per day instead of 4,000.

    1. My apologies, Jocelyn, for taking so long to respond to your comment. I don't know where the time goes!!! Thank you for the comment and encouragement. I wish I were rid of vertigo, too. The mornings and evenings seem to be the worst.
