Somewhere Between Green and Blue....

Aqua, turquoise, blue-green, green-blue, cyan, cerulean, azure, celadon, turquoise, teal, and probably hundreds of slight variations in those color combinations make up the color range between green and blue. Aqua is the RSC color for August, so I made a few nine-patch blocks for my quilt similar to this quilt Jolene made.  My preference leans toward teal, but I have plenty of lighter, brighter fabrics in the blue-green range.
There are one or two squares in this group that I might think of as absolutely green, but aqua is one of those flexible colors.  Put it next to blue and it might look very green.  Put it next to green and it leans toward blue.  Ah, well, since no one polices the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, we can all decide which fabrics look aqua (or pink or blue or red, etc.) to us.

I love Jolene's quilt but I'm not sure whether the blocks I'm making will pull off the look.  I haven't laid them out in any arrangement yet.  I think it's too soon to know, specially since I don't have the fabrics for the  background blocks (white, or off white) chosen yet.

I also made a few more pink and purple blocks.  I don't know how many of each I will need....
Does it count for good when you really want to do something positive and can't quite muster the energy to do it?  It feels like life is passing me by as I wait to get past the effects of the drug that I hoped would alleviate this headache.  I sometimes wonder if I will ever be able to fall asleep quickly again, or if I will ever recover from having too little sleep.  What do you think, or what have your heard, or what has your experience been:  Can we catch up on sleep?

I did not know that Hens and Chicks plants grew flowers!  (Unless maybe this is not a Hens and Chicks plant.)  I was in an office building the other day and when walking past one of the doors I saw this plant with a long "string" coming out of it.  At first I thought someone had raped a pink charging cord over the plant.

Upon closer inspection I realized it was a stem with flowers.  Aren't they the dearest little flowers?!
If I get back to the building in the next week or two, I'll check on this plant and see what the next development in its growth is.  Or maybe I'll stop in at the office and ask about the plant.

That's it for me this week.  I hope you have a good weekend and upcoming week.

  1. Lack of good sleep is so difficult--with me, then a brain fogginess moves right in!! Very difficult!!
I like your aqua takes on the differing shades in this range...nice groupings in each block...
Here's hoping you feel better and get some quality sleep in...

    1. Thanks so much, Julierose. Yes, when I'm tired it seems like I can't think straight. I know not to do important things then!

  2. I sure hope you can catch up on lack of sleep because I also need to! Vacation was fun, but the bed was so different. The blocks look great. And yes, hens and chicks plants can bloom. They must be doing something right because I don't think it happens often. Lucky you got to see it!

    1. I hope you've caught up on sleep, Katie, or are at least starting to. There are so many things that can affect how we sleep, the mattress, the sheets, the light/lack of light in a room; outside noises.... Just so many things! I have no idea why I can't sleep but I'm blaming in on a residue of duloxetine in my system.
That little stem coming out of the center of the hens & chicks plant was so strange, almost like someone poked a thin cord into the plant between the leaves. When I saw it this week, the stem was starting to shrivel and the flowers were drying out. I stopped in the office to ask about it and she seemed so pleased at the interest. I hope it keeps blooming!

  3. The hen n chicks flower is adorable. I had a tiny rock garden as a child and my hen n chicks did bloom. I think tho the host plant then shoots up and dies off tho. Not sure.

Love your various nine patch blocks. They would make a beautiful Rainbow lap quilt if you don't feel up to the snow ball centers.

I hope your sleep and health improve, you've had a tough year!

    1. I agree, Lizzy! I think that flower could the focus of an applique block. It's strange that when I looked up hens and chicks online and clicked on images, there wasn't a single one with that long stem with flowers. It did look like the host plant shoots up and dies.
Thanks for your comment about the purple blocks. I've been starting to gather white/light backgrounds for the snowball blocks. We'll see how far I get.
And also thank you for your kind wishes about my sleep. This has been the strangest year. You haven't had an easy year, either, though. As I get older I realize how tenuous health is, or maybe just how sensitive my body is to some situations. I don't know which. I hope you're feeling better after that awful insect problem!

  4. Sleep always seems to elude us when we need it the most. Though I don't generally have that problem, it does seem like every time we have our quilt ministry meeting coming up the next day, I can't get to sleep until 2 or 3 am, and have to get up at 5:00. It's got to be psychological, but how to counteract that? Wish I could offer you a magic cure.

    1. Yes, I think that's true, Pat. I can always plan on not getting to sleep until early morning if/when I have an early morning start. I don't know how to counteract it, either. If I figure it out what works for me, I'll let you know so you can try it, too! And I hope you'll do the same.

  5. I remember Hen and Chicks in my mother's garden. Never saw one in bloom. Sorry about the lack of sleep. I've had more than one night where I simply cannot settle. I know that I sleep because eventually I wake up. Are you able to nap? (Some people can't settle in the middle of the day. I love naps.) ...... On to more cheerful things, specifically the RSC blocks. Yes, aqua/teal/turquoise certainly range from green to blue. Sometimes they go together nicely and other times they definitely clash.

    1. Not even google has images of a hens and chicks plant in bloom like this one was. Strange.
Yes, I can nap, thank goodness. In fact, when the intensity of this headache increases, that's about all I can do. I'm not sure how good the sleep is, though.... I, too, love naps.
Thank you for your comment on the aqua blocks. I believe some of these colors may definitely clash, but I'm not changing them. (Yet.)

  6. Lack of sleep will sure impact our ability to get things done. I've never seen a flower on those plants either. I love those pretty 9-patch blocks.

    1. I agree, Sara. I can't even think straight enough to decide when I need to do when I don't get enough sleep. Then I seem to just let the day do whatever it wants....
Thanks for your comment about the blocks.

  8. Beautiful colours and patterns! I am 68, and as I age I notice that lack of sleep happens more frequently than in my "younger days".

    1. Thank you, Linda. I guess lack of sleep could be related to age, and that's a very sad thought considering that I won't be getting younger.

  9. I just remembered that I never commented on this post. The blocks with Aqua in them are my favorite of all the colors you've done. This is going to be a pretty quilt. I enjoyed seeing the unusual blooms from a Hen and Chicks plant. Nature never disappoints in putting something on display that I've never seen before. I sure hope you're feeling better.

    1. Thank you for coming back to comment, Robin. I think I like the aqua colors best, too. They're a little brighter, maybe, or maybe it's that there are more lights, mediums, and darks in them. I think so many of my other blocks have lights and darks, but few mediums.
I was at the building yesterday where the hens and chicks plant is. The stem and blooms are mostly dried out but the stem is still attached to the plant. I've searched but not seen another plant like this one, with the stem coming from between the leaves like this one does.
Thank you for your wishes for my health. I'm not taking any medication for the headache now. I still have it but am able to sleep a little better and feel just a little less tired. I hope to get back to before-headache-normal soon!

  10. Beautiful blocks in such pretty shades, Nancy. No I never saw flowers on any Hens and Chicks I've had. Interesting.

    1. Thank you, Jocelyn. I think I'm finally figuring out that these blocks need lights, mediums, and darks, not just lights and darks or mediums and darks. Slow learner here. Haha.
I've not seen another hens and chicks plant with a stem like this one anywhere on the internet. Who knows!
