RSC Blocks, Little Plaid Basket, Locust Trees, and the Ocean

Autumn has been moseying its way into central Ohio, even now at the end of October.  The temperatures are cool but the colors are still mostly green.  It's an autumn without the bright colors we associate with fall.  The colors and timing this year is similar to the the year I made the maple leaves quilt.  That year I decided if nature wasn't going to provide autumn colors, I would make them myself.  I think we'll still have green leaves in November again this year!

These six blocks below are probably the last I'll make for my Rainbow Scrap 9-patch quilt.  Last month Angela suggested sea colors--blues/aquas--but I had plenty of those and made these instead.
Oops!  I finished stitching this Little Plaid Baskets with Zinnias block.  How can I have spent so much time with it in my hands and not have seen the problem?!
It looks like I'll be doing some unstitching soon.  (Color above is more accurate.)

Lizzy and I both talk about locust trees.  I love our honey locusts, and was surprised when she first responded with her intense dislike of locust trees.  What's not to like? I wondered.  She mentioned the thorns she remembers from childhood and how they stabbed her feet.  But ours don't have thorns.  With a little research, I learned that there are several kinds of locust trees.  Finally, a year or so ago at a nearby park, I saw what she was talking about.  Now I understand her dislike of the trees.

In autumn the leaves of our honey locust trees turn a bright golden hue.  When they cover the ground, they almost seem to pave the it with gold.  I feel so wealthy in the fall.  The leaves add such brightness to my world.  Their only drawback is that they are not friendly to our house:  on rainy or damp days, they cling to our shoes and if we're not careful, come inside and fall to the floor leaving a mess.  Even with that small inconvenience, I love them.  (The photo at right was taken in a neighborhood a mile or so away.

And the ocean!  We went to the dear, dear ocean the first week of October.  I was thrilled to go!  After family events at the beginning of the year, I thought our trip last September was the last time in my life I would see the ocean in person.  It was wonderful to go again.  (The weather is better in September than October.  That is, if there isn't a hurricane.)

This was our view from the hotel room on sunny Tuesday morning.  You can see the rain streaks on the window.  They were easy to ignore with the gorgeous view.  We were on the third floor this year, so a better view but more steps. Later that day we walked through beautiful Thompson Island.  It's on the northeast corner of Rehoboth Bay with a path that meanders through a forest and ends at a tidal marsh.  It's an interesting contrast to have forest just a mile or so from the ocean.
The forest floor was covered with pine needles from the tall loblolly pines. (What a fun name!)
The next day was cloudy with a calm ocean.  I love the ocean no matter what the weather but boisterous waves are more fun to watch.  It was foggy in the morning and still cloudy after the fog dissipated.
It was interesting to see the little tide pools after the tide went out.  They were gone after a few hours.
Another interesting feature of the beach this year was the ledge the waves/tide created in thee sand.  It was less than a foot high and was only along a short section of the beach.
On Thursday, the waves were stronger and the sky mostly clear blue.
This is the path we walk from our hotel to the ocean.
And this is the path from the ocean to the hotel.
I've been back from vacation for two weeks but I'm having trouble setting aside the vacation mindset.  Responsibilities?  What responsibilities?  I just want to relax.  Do you struggle with the transition from vacation to real life, too?  I need to get on with making alternate blocks for the RSC quilt....

  1. FWIW I don't know what was mis-stitched in the zinnia basket.....What a nice getaway! Yes, I have trouble getting back to daily life after a trip. First, there's the funny feeling that you as a traveler have changed, but home (the street, the house) are the same. And then there's tackling all the things put off until "after the trip." Which is precisely where I am as I type this comment.

    1. I'm so glad the mis-stitched zinnia didn't look odd to you, Nann. Others have convinced me that it looks like the stem went behind the basket handle and the flower popped its head forward. I'm leaving it.
I understand and agree with both your getting-back-to-normal challenges. Exactly!

  2. Lovely post, Nancy. I have never seen a locust tree so that was very interesting to me. How wonderful you got to the ocean again and what a lovely trip with great sea photos too. I miss the ocean very much. I went to look at your Maple Leaf quilt...such pretty colours and I love Zinnia with a tiny booboo. :)

  3. Oh! I loved your little mistake. I would leave it in because it would make me laugh every time I noticed it. It such a touch of whimsy. I'm glad you were able to go to the beach to relax and rejuvenate. I hope you're feeling better. We have honey locust trees too and I'm always sweeping the walk in the fall so the leaves don't get walked in. On the years we have more moisture the trees are just golden in the sun. It's been an unusual fall but for some reason I have enjoyed it more than I normally do. It has just felt so rich somehow.

    1. I'm so glad you enjoyed the mistake on the zinnia and basket, Robin.  I've decided to leave it, mostly because several people including my husband thought it was fine.
It was wonderful at the beach.  I keep wishing I could go back and just leave everything behind again.  But it's not possible.
Those honey locust leaves are pesky, especially after a rain.  It's hard to sweep them, even from the sidewalk.
It's been an unusual fall here, too, probably because of lack of rain.  We're just now getting our wealth of autumn color, though it's less bright than usual.  I like bright Octobers but I'm good with color in November, too.

  4. Omigosh I cringe even now seeing those locust thorns. We were barefoot kids back in the day, oh those thorns hurt. I love your golden leaf carpet. Like you, I am not so happy with the leaves that sneak in, blow in.

I'd leave the funny oops on Zinnie Baskets, how it would make me smile.

So glad you got to go to the beach, perhaps your daughter visited? And it's a lovely beach. Be wary of those cliffs, the sand will collapse underfoot and you'll tumble down the slope. The unstable sand also makes it hard to climb back up, it's higher than you think.

You sound relaxed and happy, hope you feel ok too. PS I d love to see your Autumn Leaves quilt again, did you bring it out?

    love

    2. I decided to leave the basket as is, LIzzy. Several people didn't notice a problem--they saw stem behind the basket handle, flower popped to the front--and I guess people will see it however they do, if they even notice. Maye they'll chuckle or maybe they'll see it the other way.
I'm glad I got to the beach, too. My daughter suggested the trip for us and she drove. We had a good time. I always enjoy her company (except when she's trying to avoid me or is unhappy with me). I stood near the edge of that little cliff and pushed some of the sand over, but not much. It was easy to tell that I could end up sitting in the sand instead of standing! And sand can be so slippery!
The autumn leaves quilt is on a bed upstairs. I loved making it but it's strange, now, that I don't love it quite as much as while stitching it. Glad you found the post and photos.

  5. Ha, I had to look three times before spotting the little oopsie! Definitely leave it in and don't tell anyone, and I'll bet it never gets noticed. It's kind of like a flower peeking over a rail fence. Oh, the ocean, I'd love to see the New England ocean again one day. You were lucky to have had delightful weather for your trip.

    1. I'm so glad the problem with the zinnia and basket wasn't too obvious to you, Pat. I decided to leave it and imagine the flower hanging its head over the basket handle.
I hope you get to the New England ocean. I went that far north with my parents when I was younger but haven't been since then. It was great to have mostly dry, mostly sunny weather!

  6. Our fall colors have not been as bright, due to a very dry summer. But I still love the season. It is still lovely weather here, with temps in the 50s and 60s, but we are expecting some rain tomorrow. I actually love rainy days when I get to stay cozy inside.
Your fall blocks make me want to go play in fall colored scraps.
Your plaid block doesn't have to be a mistake at all. To me it just appears that the stem goes up behind the handle, and the flower head flops over the top of the handle.
I love that you got to go to the ocean. Any day at the ocean is a lovely day, whether you get wet from waves, or rain. The shots of your surroundings helped me feel as if I had been with you to the beach!

    1. It's amazing to me how much dry weather affects the colors of autumn leaves. We're just now getting the bright colors on the trees, even as the leaves are beginning to fall. I love rainy days, too, Janet, and like you, don't love being out in the rain.
Those blocks are such dull fall colors. I love them but and would probably enjoy a whole quilt of them, but in real life I like bright autumn colors. I hope you had a chance to play in your fall colored scraps.
I decided to leave the zinnia as it is. Several people didn't notice a problem and others, like you, suggested a different view of how the flower and stem aren't connected. It will be fine.
I'm glad you enjoyed the ocean photos. I was thrilled to be there!
