Morning Stars for Isaac:  a Finish

This little quilt for my grandson was probably one of the quickest quilts I've made.  I began it in early August and finished the binding on the last day of October.

I think you can see the quilting lines better in this photo.

In the tradition of women sitting around a quilting frame at a quilting bee, I used Baptist Fans and began on the right side of one long edge and continued to the other end, followed by several  more rows of fans.  Then I turned the quilt to the opposite corner of the other side and repeated the process until the rows met in the middle.  I wasn't sure it would work but there was just a little puffiness in the center and it was no trouble to quilt it flat again.

The top measured 44" x 50" before layering and quilting.  After it was quilted and bound it measured 43 1/2" x 50".  I forgot to measure it after it was washed and dried.

I used Soft n Crafty 80% cotton / 20% polyester.  It quilts easily and washes and dries well.

I like this pattern a lot, especially with change to "casual" stars.  After having made this multi-colored, scrappy version I can now imagine scrappy but more color-controlled variations and will probably make another quilt or two with this pattern.

And this is the little fellow who will use this quilt.  His older brother and sister were thrilled with it and took it over right away.  They stood close and asked to have it wrapped around them with a tie around them.  They tried to walk together but soon tumbled to the ground laughing and giggling.  They are only 19 months apart and good friends.

  2. Wonderful, Nancy! It is a great scrap quilt--a pattern I have long admired, but never made.
    Cute little recipient. : )

  3. What a treasure. He'll have it forever. I've a feeling you're going to need 3 more, only bigger, very soon. Kids grow so fast.

    1. Hi, Bonnie. Thanks. You're right, I will need to make three bigger quilts soon. When I was making one for my second grandchild my daughter bemoaned the fact that it was about the same size as for her older brother who, she thought, was already outgrowing his. But if it's too big for a baby it won't get used as much.

    1. Thanks so much, Missy. This quilt tried to tug me toward outline quilting, especially around the stars, but Baptist Fans are so much faster and I was already so late getting the quilt made. I think the fan quilting works.

    2. Wonderful scrappy quilt for your grandchildren to enjoy! I had fun conjuring up the image of the two older ones wrapped up in it and then tumbling over. The quilting is just lovely, too!

    3. Thanks, Vic. The two older children are just 19 months apart so there is lots of fun with them, no matter what they do.

  10. I love that pattern too and have had it on the back burner to start...hopefully soon. T=You must have quilted around the clock in order to get it finished so quickly, but I know your handsome grandson is going to treasure that beautiful quilt for many years to come. His siblings were sweet to break it in for him. :)

    1. Hi, Karin. If/when you make this quilt, will you do "casual" stars or regular? I've done stars both ways and though the look is a little different, I most enjoyed making the casual ones.

Not quite around the clock -- because the quilt isn't all that large -- but diligently and consistently.

I hope he enjoys it. He won't know it for a bit but I hope at some point he'll realize he's wrapped in his grandmother's love when he gets cuddled in it.
