Introducing Sophia Lillian

This little miss is my granddaughter, Sophia Lillian, who arrived on Sunday, April 25.

Having spent nearly a week with her and her family I can attest to the fact that she is (currently) a diligent sleeper and as sweet as can be.  I love her to bits.

While there I did the usual mom and gramma things to help the family--laundry, meals, baby-tending so mom could sleep, transporting, etc.  It was all good.

Sophia has three older brothers, ages nearly-9, 5, and 2, and an older sister who is 6.  They are positively joyful children, just happy with whatever comes their way, whatever they find to do, and they're creative enough to find plenty to do that's within the bounds of safety.

They live on a 30-acre farm with cows, sheep, 4 pigs (that everyone else in the family thinks are adorable (Can you tell I don't like pigs?)), rabbits, and a variety of birds including chickens, ducks, a goose or two, and some quail.  There is always something to do at their house, either inside or outside--some game to play with them, some book to read, some roaming to do in the pastures, animals to feed, eggs to collect....  The life they take for granted is really very interesting and sometimes even exciting.

I loved nearly every minute of my time there.  I came home exhausted but I woke up the next morning and I realized I live a very boring life.  After time with them, quilting just doesn't compare for fun and excitement.  Ha!  I wish our homes were about three hours closer to each other.

  1. Oh isn't that just the way--we don't see how quiet our lives become when the children are all grown up and have left to form their own families until we visit and then return home.
Sophia is so beautiful--so sweet--Nice that you got to be close to her and the family to help out...hugs, Julierose

    1. You're so right, Julierose.  I guess it was such a gradual progression into aloneness that I didn't really notice (and thought I was fine) until this last visit.

I think Sophia is just lovely, too -- perfect before all those baby spots arrive for a week or two.

    1. Thanks, Cynthia.  Sophia is sweet, for sure, and her family lives in a very active household.  Sophia is getting used to sleeping through noise.

    1. Thank you, Jennie.  I think her older sister was hoping the baby would be a girl, though big sister holds her own against the boys without problem.  Haha.  Mom didn't feel so great so the baby quilt sort of went by the wayside but I'm sure it will get used and be appreciated.

    1. Thank you, Joyful.  The quilt was not in heavy use yet but I did want a photo with her and it.

  5. It sounds like your beautiful new grand baby is embarking on an idyllic childhood! Growing up in a big family on a farm is just about perfect in my book. She sleeps so peacefully wrapped in the quilt you made for her.

    1. Thank you, Pat.  Sophia's family faces a lot of challenges but being happy, living on a farm is not one of them so yes, I would agree it will be an idyllic childhood for her (and is already for her siblings).  She was a really peaceful sleeper while we were there, waking only to eat.  I wonder what changes there will be within the next few weeks....

  7. Look at little Sophia asleep on her lovely new quilt. She is very sweet. Sounds like there is a lot going on at her house. No wonder the kids don't need a lot of entertainment with all that stimulus going on around them. I'm glad you got to go and be a part of all of Sophia's newness. I lead quite a boring life too but sometimes the price of peace is in not scheduling things.

    1. Thank you, Robin.  She does, indeed, live in a busy household and I'm certain she'll learn to sleep through most anything!  I was thrilled to be able to visit and help the little that I did.  That's true of peace.  I think I'm feeling the effects of being mostly homebound for over a year.

    2. Thank you, Lizzy.  Yes, it's a wonderful big family, but you're right, I am tired.  After a week's visit I always give myself a week to take it easy and rest.  If only I'd had my daughters when I was younger and my daughter had had her children when she was younger, I'd be in great shape (I think).
One of these visits I'll have to take some photos of the farm to share.  Their home is at the top of a steep hill with the driveway in front and the rest of the property behind.  It has both level pastures and gently sloping hills.  I think spring is its finest season.
The quilt wasn't used while we were there except a time or two when I needed to cover her and it was handy.  I hope her mom likes it and will use it.  These days minky seems to be the preferred fabric of young moms.
