My grandfather had a musical instrument he called a sweet potato but which, as far as I know, he never played. A number of years ago I learned that a sweet potato is also called an ocarina.
I was thrilled to find this video of an ocarina septet. Enjoy!
If you enjoy writing, love the English language, this post about semicolons may be for you. Do you think semicolons are overused? I thought this was interesting, especially the little semicolon test near the end.
These photos of Owls in Towels come from all over the world.
Rescuers and members of medical teams wrap injured owls in towels to assess their injuries and to prevent them from flapping their wings. Mostly too cute, but a few look grumpy. At the website, click on an owl to learn more about him or her.
Leaf cuttings! Such fun. Instead of paper Lido uses leaves as the background to create tiny scenes and silhouettes of animals. Patience, precision, creativity, a sense of humor. Look at some of his Instagram photos here, read a more detailed article here. And this link is the best because if has a close-up photo of a bear with a basket of sweet gum balls using tongs to hand a porcupine baby back to its mother. Its title is, "Wait a second! That's my baby!" The detail in the image and the humor it makes me chuckle.
I hope you found something to enjoy at one of these links.

We had ocarinas in 5th grade. The resulting sounds were not pretty. I know I ll enjoy the rest of your finds.

LOL. I can imagine, LIzzy! We had recorders (which were called Tonettes) and we sounded awful, too.
DeleteThe ocarina piece is great! I recalled a song "Dance to the Music of the Ocarina," and looked it up -- by Irving Berlin. I took the semicolon quiz in the article and aced it.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you enjoyed the ocarina septet, Nann. And thanks for mentioning Irving Berlin's song. It was a fun one.
DeleteI had no doubt you would ace the semicolon quiz. So did I.
I loved every one of your links!!!!! I had not heard of ocarinas since my childhood, and I cannot remember why I knew about them then! I may have had one as a toy. Anyway, this group is amazing! And those owls!!!!! Thanks for the fun!!!!! Carol in Texas
ReplyDeleteSo glad you enjoyed them, Carol. I was impressed with the ocarina group, too. They have more performances on youtube. You're welcome for the fun!
DeleteI loved all the links, thanks. The leaf cuttings are so adorable--tho I d rather have paper that I could save forever. The semi colon article was interesting [I got a 10!]; when I was active in a Yahoo and then FB writing group, and did editing for other writers, I was so against the use of semicolons. I'd ''red pencil'' every one, say, "Outdated and lazy writing! No place for semicolon in fiction or casual writing--and never ever in conversation. Who talks w semicolons, that's just silly. " [the point of fictional conversation being to make it seem realistic and believable...] And yes my use of brackets a is wrong but I hate to look for the parentheses, crappy typer.

I'm glad you enjoyed the links, Lizzy.
DeleteI agree, the cuttings on leaves would last much longer if they were on paper, but there's a novelty about seeing them cut into leaves. If I had one, I'm sure I would make a color copy or make photographs, just to preserve it.
I got a 10 on the semicolon quiz, too. Your comment about them makes me laugh. Were you also a teacher?
