Early Dark, a Book, and RSC 2025 Nine-Patch & Snowball Progress

As the evening dark begins descending earlier and earlier it signals to me a time to slow down, stop hurrying, reset priorities, especially where daylight is concerned, and enjoy the slowness of the season.  I love these early and long nights.  They're just what I need and, I suppose, just what the earth needs, too.  I couldn't get this song out of my mind and decided to share.

I think I've mentioned before that our local library has a little shop where they sell used books and give away magazines and some children's paperback books.  A few weeks ago I picked up this book, The Home Builders.
I love children's book for a variety of reasons.  Sometimes they just make me laugh--a little surprise at the end, or just-perfect illustrations, or a funny story line.  Other times there's a subtle truth presented so simply that a child can understand and an adult can understand more.  And other times, the illustrations wow me.
The illustrations are what captured my attention in this book.  I fell in love with the colors the illustrator, Simona Mulazzani, used. But it isn't just the colors, it's also their intensity and tone and how she uses the colors together.  I think they are beautiful and sometimes the combinations are surprising.  I couldn't figure out why they were so appealing.  And then it hit me:  these colors are similar to the ones I use most often in quilts (minus the oranges).

As I've been making blocks for my 2025 RSC quilt, I've been frustrated with how few medium value fabrics I have.  They are mostly darks and lights, with very few mediums.  Some of the blocks look like a muddle.  This may turn out to be a boring quilt.  I'm glad each 9-patch is surrounded by white snowball blocks!
Anyway, it was an interesting observation.  I need to buy a few fabrics with lighter tones and values.

I've been feeling a little scattered lately....
... what with trying to find the best, yet least expensive, retirement health insurance policies (one of my policies more than doubled its rate from last year to this year!); trying to stay motivated on the sewing/quilting front; and trying to lay out my RSC blocks to consider placement and size.  Kitty Bitsy thinks those blocks on the floor are a free ride.  She jumps onto one in a way that lets her slide across part of the floor like it's a skating rink and the blocks go flying.  She makes quick work of my efforts.

They were arranged as I thought I wanted them but I need to make several more edge blocks and cut some more for around the edges.  Sadly, I didn't count before Bitsy skated through.  I should have taken photos and counted as soon as I put the blocks on the floor.  I need to decide whether to make the quilt larger or the same size as Jolene's, 9 blocks by 11 blocks, which equals about 54" x 66" before quilting and shrinkage from washing and drying.  That seems like it would be a short person's napping quilt.  (I like to tuck the end of a quilt under my feet and pull it up to my neck and across my shoulders for a nap.)  Anyway, this will most likely become a donation quilt so it matters much less what my preferences are.  I'm so close to having the blocks ready to sew into a top that I might just call the blocks I have enough.  However, that leaves me a short stack of unused, one-color, 9-patch blocks in several different colors....  Hmmm.

For anyone who may be wondering:  my headache persists and my energy waxes and wanes.  Have you tried or do you know anyone who has experience with acupuncture?

Okay, that's it for today.  I need to get on with some other things.  I hope you're having a good weekend and are enjoying whatever weather and activities come your way.

  1. My DIL had a lot of success with acupuncture for her neck spasms--but I, personally, have not had any experience myself. Sorry to hear that your symptoms persist; I totally understand as I am having the same bounce back with my Lyme disease side effects.
I had to smile when I saw what Bitsy did to your layout--nice of you to provide a quilt block playground for her (not!!) hahaha.
We are still acclimating to these early dark evenings and mealtime changes...I guess slowing down is a good way to deal with them.
    Hugs, Julierose

    1. I'm still considering acupuncture but haven't made a decision yet.  I've heard from several people that it's helped them, but I'm just not sure that it will help this headache.  IF I decide to do it and the headache is gone after a visit or two, I will feel really frustrated with myself that I didn't go earlier.
I'm sorry you're still having side effects from Lyme disease, Julierose.  There are so many awful illnesses!
Maybe I should give Bitsy a block playground on a more regular basis and try to teach when the blocks are her for play and mine, no for play!   Hahaha.
Are you doing better with early dark now?  I think I've adjusted.  It's hard, though, because I don't like driving at night and need to get errands done before 5 p.m.

  2. I saw the layout photo and my first thought was "cat?" and I was right. We have carpet, but that doesn't seem to keep mine from destroying a quilt layout just as successfully! I, too, love the illustrations in the book. Kids books are so often a treasure trove of amazing art. I'm sorry your headaches persist and I hope acupuncture does the trick. (My cousin did it for cat allergies and now is proud a cat dad!)

    1. You have a good eye for cat activity, Katie!  Oh, I'm sorry the carpet doesn't keep prevent their play with quilt blocks.
I haven't committed to acupuncture yet.  It's amazing it stopped your cousin's allergies to cats!  Really amazing!
I agree, illustrations in children's books are often amazing.  Illustrators sometimes don't get enough credit.
I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.

  3. I too love the illustrations in that book and have spent some time trying to find a copy in fairly new or new condition without luck so far. I love kids illustrated books too and our little great granddaughter would love it I'm sure. You're right about the colors, they are just what you tend to use for most of your quilts that I've seen. I hope acupuncture works for you, no experience with it at this end. Cold and rainy today, snow in the forecast for the next several days. We were hoping for another few warmer and sunny days so the barn painting project could be completed this fall.

    1. The copy of the book I have is from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, obviously donated to the library by someone who didn't value it; or maybe didn't have young children now. I'll keep an eye out for another so I can send it to you. Or maybe, eventually, I'll be able to part with this one.
I haven't committed to acupuncture yet. If I do and it works, I'll feel frustrated that I didn't decide to go sooner.
Did you get warmer days for the barn painting, Pat? We had two warmish days last week but it's been cool and cold here with plenty of grey days, both with and without rain.
I hope you have a good Thanksgiving.

  4. Beautiful colorwork in the patches. I love them all together in that one photo. What a treasure of 21st century fabric this will be some day.

The book is beautiful. I too love children's books, as I think you know. I enjoyed your analysis of this book's colors--but surely you can add some colors like orange? Look how the orange just glows and rivets one's attention.

I m sorry the headaches persist. I ve wakened daily w a headache since July, a mild migraine of the ''nail in one's eye '' sort. It lessens as the day goes on but is there. I think all the joint pain meds take the edge off. All my life I've had daily migraines for months or years, then they go away also for years. Not thrilled they're here again.

    1. Thank you, Lizzy. I hadn't thought of the blocks as 21st century fabric samples, but they sure are. There may be a few from the late 1900s, but not many.
Yes, I can add some orange, and do use it occasionally. Your comment made me think of my stars quilt (as yet unfinished) which does have orange. (Here: https://joyforgrace.blogspot.com/2016/05/closer-to-decision-i-think.html. But ignore the border. It's coming off.)
I'm sorry about your headaches, too. Especially migraines! How awful. Pain is so draining and tiring. I hope they go away again soon.

  5. I have a wonderful image of a cat on skates helping you arrange the blocks. Snowball is appropriate for us today (8" of snow thus far). Hope your headache abates.

    1. I love it, Nann.  A cat wearing skates.
We had a few inches of snow a week ago.  It seems crazy to me to get snow so early!  We've had lots of cool and cold days, and plenty of grey skies, plus occasional rain.  I wonder weather what winter will bring.
Thank you for your well wishes for my headache.  One of these days....
I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.

  6. I just love those illustrations and the little animals peeking out...I made the photo larger to have a good look. It seems we like the same things, Nancy. Love the idea of a napping quilt. And as soon as I saw your scattered blocks I thought of your cat. That Bitsy. Of course, I can't put anything on the floor here either...two animals would be very "interested". Headaches are terrible; I do hope yours disappears completely soon.

    1. Living where you do, you're more likely to actually see the real live animals that I usually only see in children's picture books!  I love that you take and share so many photos, Jocelyn.
I don't think animals have any awareness of yours/mine, nor of not walking on things on the floor.  But we love our dogs and cats all the same!
Thank you for your wishes for my headache to go away.  I hope it does soon.

  7. The video is so lovely. I don't think I've ever heard that song. I have the Tabernacle Choir Christmas CD with Sissel singing "In the Bleak Mid-winter" which I love. The colors in that children's book are so dynamic and so I need to study them. You do have a palette of colors that you use often and I've wondered how to put them together because those shades are so distinct. Now I'll just study the pictures in that book. Take care.

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed the video with Sissel, Robin. I think she has a beautiful voice.
I need to study the pictures in the book, too, Robin, so I can do better at choosing colors that work well together.

  8. I do love children's illustrated books. The ones you share here are beautifully color saturated. And I think the orange gives them depth!
As maddening as Bitsy's "help" was, I bet it would have made a great cat video.
So sorry you are still experiencing the headaches. I have been doing acupuncture since mid-July, but not for headaches. I went once a week for about three months, and now I go every-other week. My doctor does Chinese acupuncture, which is a bit more aggressive than Japanese acupuncture (according to him). I would be happy to answer whatever questions you might have.

    1. I agree, I think the orange adds a lot of interest and adds depth.  I use orange occasionally but it's not one of my first choices.
You know, I've never seen Bitsy in the act of skating across the blocks.  I occasionally see her walking gingerly.  Maybe she doesn't really skate and slide, but if I ever see her, I'll pull my phone out as quickly as I can.
Thank you for the offer to answer questions about acupuncture.  I should check and see what kind my friend's doctor does.  Is it painful?  Do you have pain after it's done?  Do they use alcohol to clean where they're going to put the needles?  How long do the needles stay in?  And how many needles at a time?
