A Crow, a Surgery, the Ocean, and a Little Plaid Basket (but not in that order)

To those of you who left comments on my last post, thank you!  I responded on the post and not to your email boxes.  There seem to be some glitches in either my computer, with my software, with my mouse, or maybe with gmail.  I lost all of your comment emails (and about two months' worth of other emails).  I hope you can forgive me for not responding directly to you.

Knee replacement surgery was on October 22.  I think I'm doing better earlier this time than last, though walking with a walker is still slow and there's still pain.  It's hard to keep one leg elevated and do things like write blog posts at a computer, use a sewing machine, sometimes even stitch by hand.  Swelling is inevitable after a knee replacement, even with TED hose, hence the elevation requirement.

But, early in October, my daughter and I went to Dewey Beach, Delaware, for a few days.  One day each to drive down and back, but three glorious days at the ocean.  We had an ocean view from our hotel which sits just behind the dunes making it a short walk to the beach.  My daughter kept commenting on what a wonderful vacation it was, and it really was wonderful, but still challenging for me with a barely healed knee and being short on both strength and stamina.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

In my opinion you can never had too many photos of the ocean but one post can have too many of my ocean photos.  Here are a few.  We had days of both clouds and sun.  I never tire of watching the ocean.

A trip to Dewey Beach wouldn't be complete without a walk through a nearby nature preserve (whose name I can't remember).  No part of it borders the ocean but a section borders the bay.
And then there were the seagulls at Rehoboth Beach.  We saw them practically dive-bombing people who had purchased french fries. No fries for us!

Back to knee surgery, but not about knee surgery.  If you think you might need ice packs (for scrapes or migraines or a sore back) this is a great, simple recipe.  In a gallon-size plastic zipper bag (best to use the brand-name ones) pour 3 cups water and 1 cup rubbing alcohol.  Zip and put into another zip bag, zip, then into the freezer.

It's hard to photograph the contents of these ice packs but when frozen they are like crunchy ice.  Put a towel or other cloth around them before putting on skin. I highly recommend them.

The other thing I wanted to post is a pain scale my doctor included in a booklet they gave me before the first surgery. That pain scale always confused me--a scale compared to what?--and this chart clarified it for me.   Now the doctor or nurse or physical therapist and I are all on the same page when I say my pain is at a level 6 or 2 or 9, etc.
The Pain Scale
My only stitching has been on this little plaid basket.  I wasn't sure about the fabric but have decided I like it.  I'm looking forward to choosing flowers to go inside.

Regular readers may remember that I'm not a fan of Halloween but I couldn't resist taking a photo of the dapper Edgar Allan Crow in front of the public library at Rehoboth Beach.  The librarians outdid themselves.
Edgar Allan Crow at Rehoboth Beach Public Library
My daughter and I stood outside the library trying to get a good look at all aspects of Edgar and take photographs.  At one point I stumbled backward over the edge of the sidewalk and, arms flailing, could feel myself on the way to the ground.  My daughter reached out her hand to steady me just in time.  It must have been a sight to behold.  When we walked into the library, the librarian behind the counter asked what we thought of their crow and told us what fun they'd had creating him.  It was then I realized that he'd probably been watching through the large picture window and had a full view of my near-fall.  What must he have thought, I've wondered.  Drunk?  Old woman?  Dizzy with admiration for Edgar?  I chuckle about it every time I think of it.

I hope you good readers are doing well.  Thanks for visiting.

  1. Hoping you recover quickly from your surgery--having to deal with pain is no fun for sure...
I love ocean pictures--i find watching the waves roll in so relaxing...
We are not Halloween fans much either...Happy to hear that your daughter was able to keep you from a fall!!
Your little plaid basket is so cute...

    1. Thank you, Julierose. I don't know anyone who's a fan of pain but it sure makes times of no pain all the sweeter.
I hope you had a good Halloween.

  2. So glad to hear that your surgeries are all behind you and now you can just get better everyday and look forward to the holidays. The ocean looks beautiful and it sounds like you had a nice time. Your little basket looks great and I'm glad to hear you feel good enough to sew. Halloween isn't my favorite thing but I do like the school costume parades. I didn't go to one this year because the bulk of my grandchildren are 12 and above. One of the younger three is in 1st grade this year but they are the ones that just had a baby so things are still not back to normal. Maybe next year. That is a great idea for an ice bag, I'm going to share it with my husband who has a bad back and is in constant pain whether it is at a "2" or "10". He's had 3 back surgeries in the last 20 years. I really admire the way he keeps going and gets so much done in spite of the pain. Look forward to seeing the cute zinnias in the basket.

    1. I have no idea why Blogger posted your comment as from a No Reply blogger....
I'm glad the surgeries are behind me, too.  My physical therapist commented the same thing today, but then we realized the the upper half of my body, plus ankles, could need joint replacements.  I hope this is the last one, though!
School costume parades are something I haven't heard of before.  I don't think they do those in Ohio, but they would be fun!
Wow, it's amazing that your husband can keep going through so much pain.  Good for him.  I hope maybe the ice packs will help.  (As for me, I don't really want to use ice when the temperature drops because I'm already so cool.

  3. So lovely that you are done w the surgery and having a positive recuperation. Well wishes that you heal soon.

Your trip sounds delightful, I know you love the beach and ocean. Water looks cold tho? And Edgar the Raven is delightful. Poor you, glad your daughter caught you in time.

The pain chart is interesting. I have always said 9 or 10, so they must have thought I was a real drama queen. I will print out a copy for future communication. Thanks. Also for ice packs.

Do you knit? Easier to elevate leg and listen to a book or watch a movie if you're knitting, requires minimal posture issues.

    Feel better!

    love

    1. Thanks for your comment, Lizzy. It came as a no-reply comment, which I don't understand....
I'm thrilled to be done with the surgery. Recovery is a long haul. Along about day 10 through about two weeks are really hard. It feels like I'm in the middle of a dark cloud. It will lift, but then return in another few weeks. I find it hard to need help; prefer to be independent.
It was a wonderful trip. We both comment at least daily how wonderful it would be to be at the ocean again.

About the pain chart. I remember my husband needed back surgery but wasn't able to get it for nearly a month. But he was off work the whole time. When I asked him about pain he said, "It's a 10," and I thought to myself, if it were a ten, you wouldn't be doing all this running around, you'd be writhing in bed. But, pain is individual to everyone; and I notice that the pain I'm having now is always greater than the pain I had before, even if the cause of the pain is the same. Does that mean that memory erases the pain, to some extent?
I don't knit but I've started reading again and we're watching an old TV series. But maybe I should take up knitting....

  4. I'm glad your surgery was successful. It sounds as though you're managing the recovery as well as possible. Wonderful beach photos! And that crow is terrific.

  5. I have been sadly absent from blogging for a bit. Sorry I have missed all about your knee surgeries. Hope you continue to heal without any complications.
I will take all the ocean photos you want to share! So glad you had the opportunity for this getaway with your daughter before the next surgery. Looks like it was good for the soul. Getting out in nature, and having a chance to experience the majesty of the ocean have got to be healing. Living most of my life landlocked, I am always in awe of any chance to stand at (or in) the the ocean's edge. It is so vast and powerful. Thanks for sharing your photos.
Thanks for the recipe for ice bags. That will come in handy.
I've noticed my doctors' offices seem to have this more clarified version of the pain scale now. It makes a difference, doesn't it?
Love the basket fabric. Hardly ever meet a plaid I don't like. :)
The crow is a hoot! Very clever of them. Glad you didn't take a spill. That could have been a problem for your healing knee.

    1. I think you've been too busy with life to read blogs and write posts, Janet, with all your travels.
I feel the same way about the ocean that you do, Janet.
We just made some new ice bags (we think the alcohol had deteriorated the plastic in the old ones after 4 months) and I realized that they take a while to freeze the first time. But even when not frozen, they are really cold and stay that way for a while.
I haven't seen the pain scale in doctors' offices yet but it should surely help doctors and patients to be on the same page with a similar understanding.
It was such a blessing that my daughter noticed me as I was about to fall. It would have been a hard landing and may have done damage. So glad she caught me!

  6. You bring me right back to my Delaware days. I was born, raised, and had my 1st child in Wilmington. Of course every Summer we went to the Del beaches as far as possible as teens. My son's last posting as a USCG was down there. I'd love to talk to you about your knee surgery. I'm told I need both done. It's good to hear of your recovery & an excellent recipe for an ice pack for all of us to keep in the freezer. I'm sure it keeps colder than a bag of peas. -- Robin K. quiltyladyrratgmaildotcom

    1. I guess I might be just a little envious of you and your childhood near the ocean, Robin.  For me the ideal would be summer at the ocean and the other three seasons inland.  I love the seasons and the variety they bring.

Will you have knee replacements soon?  I think the hardest thing for me was not being able to rest and recuperate after surgery, wrapped in a quilt, until the incision was healed.  It was right into therapy immediately.  There's a narrow window of time to regain both extension and flexion and so it's important to begin as soon as possible.  The procedure for my knee replacements was the same but the first was really painful, the second not as painful as the first.
Yes, the ice bags are colder than peas and stay cold for a while.  Even if they're not completely frozen, they're still cold.  They take a while to freeze when first made.

  7. It's so good that the second surgery is now in your rear view mirror and you can concentrate on healing and getting back to the things you love to do. How wonderful that you were able to spend time at the ocean. Your daughter is a real blessing to you!

    1. Things are going haywire with comments on my blog posts, Pat.  Your comment didn't come to my inbox....  I tried to figure out the problem but haven't been able to yet.
Thanks for leaving a comment.  Yes, it's wonderful to have the second surgery over, though healing will take at least another six weeks, and then more time to get back to normal.  But, the surgery's done!
I was grateful my daughter invited me to the ocean.  It was a fun trip.
Yes, she is truly a blessing.  I think she's ready to get back to her own life now.  I try to be helpful but I think the two of us, my husband and I, are a lot to handle and keep up with!  Thank goodness she's so generous.

  8. It does sound so much like a lovely relaxing vacation, Nancy, and with your daughter, a bonus. Good luck with this knee rehabilitation. Sounds like you have it all sussed out and are doing so well with the care. Cute basket...any stitching moves a project forward. Enjoyed seeing Edgar Allen Crow...too funny! Take Care.

  9. Thanks, Jocelyn. My daughter often comments, "Wouldn't it be great to be at the ocean?" And I absolutely agree, though I think the ocean in December would be a little too cold to be comfortable for my bones.l
My knee is doing great but vertigo is preventing so many activities!
I hope you're doing great and having a Merry Christmas season.
