Five Blocks and Sashing to Hand Quilt

My One Monthly Goal for March is to finish hand quilting these five blocks and the rest of the sashing that haven't yet been quilted.  That will give me a finished Cheddarback quilt except for the binding.

These are the blocks I'll be quilting.
And this one, below, which is already in progress.  It has the first two lines taped for quilting.  I'm using blue painters' tape because it's the width I need, about 1½" wide.  I haven't had a problem with residue on the fabric (and hope I won't!).
These blocks are all along one edge of the quilt.  I'm not sure how that happened because I usually quilt from the enter out until I have only corner blocks to quilt.

I'm quilting diagonal lines just as the original quilter did, but after seeing how Robin (of I like to Create) has been quilting her Cheddarback blocks here, I'm beginning to wish I'd quilted mine another way.  Isn't her quilting beautiful?

It would be great if I could sew on the binding this month, too, but for my OMG I'll stay with quilting the blocks and binding.  I'm linking this post to March One Monthly Goal at Elm Street Quilts.  Thanks for hosting, Patty.

  1. Robin's quilting is so beautiful, you are right. The rest of us can only aim for that! :))) Anyway--good job getting your quilting just about done on your beautiful quilt..I am sure yours will look just lovely.
I love those blocks--but way too big a project for me these days... TGIF Hugs, Julierose

    1. Thank you, Julierose. The thing I was admiring most about Robin's quilting was the lines of the quilting, though, of course, her hand quilting is beautiful. I am for that but I probably won't manage it in my lifetime.
Some of the blocks were challenging but manageable because it was a sew-along with only a block or so a week.

  2. Doesn't it feel good to know you are almost done? Your quilt is looking wonderful. Don't feel down about the diagonal quilting because it looks lovely and it's more true to the time-period. I just wish one of my children was as charmed by 19th century fabrics as I am. I'm trying to decide where my quilt will get displayed when I finish it. It's smaller than I remembered. But, I'm relieved it's not larger because then there would be that much more to be hand quilted.

    1. Thank you.  It feels wonderful to be almost done, Robin!  As I finish the quilting I was thinking that it seems larger than I remembered it (and it seems so heavy).  I think you chose to omit the additional, optional, lowest row of blocks and a border which may be why it seems smaller.  But yes, smaller quilts can be finished sooner.  Yours looks beautiful!

  3. Wow, that is going to be wonderful to have that all quilted, but never in my wildest dreams would I get that much quilting done in a month! Good for you. I'll be cheering you one. And I think the diagonal lines will be a great look for a replica of a vintage quilt. Very appropriate!

    1. Thank you for cheering me on, Janet. As I was quilting I was trying to think how many feet or inches of quilting I'd be doing--and failed. But it's not really a whole lot. I set the bar low this time.

  4. Funny, the painters tape I use is green in colour and like you, I never have a problem with any residue. Meanwhile I'm sure diagonal lines will be wonderful, Nancy. Enjoy the slow stitching.

    1. Thank you, Jocelyn. I am enjoying getting closer to the finish of this quilt! I would love to use green painter's tape, Jocelyn, especially if it were a dark green.
